A VEGAN has launched into a bizarre rant accusing a meat-eating teen of cultural “appropriation” because she enjoys tofu.
Student Anna Del Rey, 17, shared shocking messages from the vegan who claimed she was “stealing what we need for your own selfish use”.
The militant vegan, whose identity has not been revealed, even claimed that tofu was “strictly” for vegetarians and vegans.
Anna posted the extraordinary exchange on Facebook, saying: “Apparently veganism is a culture and I’m appropriating it by eating tofu.”
The teen was approached by the vegan after sharing a recipe for 'tofurkey' – a meat substitute in the form of a loaf or casserole that is usually made from tofu.
But when questioned about how long she had been off-meat, Anna responded saying she was not a vegan or vegetarian.
Anna, from Michigan, US, explained she often makes vegan recipes because she does not like the taste and texture of most meats.
But the vegan became instantly defensive and said: “So your (sic) like pretending to be a vegan cause it’s cool and in?
“I’ve been vegan for three years now and it was the best decision I’ve made in my life.
“It’s not hip or cool, it’s important.”
Anna tried to point out she had never pretended to be vegan.
But the vegan hit back, saying: “Tofu is strictly for vegans and vegetarians. You are basically admitting to appropriating us and stealing what we need for your own selfish use.
“I’m going to request to the admin that you are removed from the group.”
Anna responded saying: “With all due respect, I’m not appropriating anything, I’m eating food I like”.
She has since shared the messages on her Facebook where the conversation has been shared more than 8,000 times.
The 17-year-old said she was aware not all vegans feel this way and insisted she did not want to “orchestrate a hidden agenda against vegans”.
The baffling conversation has sparked a huge response on social media, with hundreds of vegans and meat-eaters slamming the comments.
Brian Vu Sooooo wrote: “if non-vegans eating tofu equates to appropriating "vegan culture" does that mean vegans who eat tofu originally appropriated Asian culture? Hmmm…”
Zaine Hamka-Clark added: “Lmaoo what an idiot. This is hilarious (I’m vegan, pls don’t believe all vegans are like this)”
Sam Naylor wrote: “I’m vegan, and I think this is hilarious! What a silly cow.”
