Taxi rapist John Worboys boasted about using date rape drugs to stripper pal

Black cab rapist John Worboys confided in a stripper pal that he gave women date-rape drugs, years before the string of horrific attacks he was jailed for.

Dave Hanson says Worboys even urged him to try drugging women himself with GHB, saying chillingly: “They won’t even know, they’ll do whatever you want. I’m telling you, it works.”

He said of Worboys: “He was never short of women. But he wanted the ones he couldn’t have.”

Dave admitted he now wishes he had gone to the police at the time, as it could have stopped the rapist in his tracks.

He said: “The way he described things to me I didn’t feel I had enough details.

“But I’ll do all I can now to ensure he doesn’t get out of prison. I’ll tell the police what he told me – it’s not right that he should get away with it.”

In an exclusive interview Dave, 50, who used the stage name Omega Man, tells how he first met Worboys when they were both working as professional strippers in the 1990s.

He worked with him up to a dozen times and Worboys – who called himself Terry the Minder – boasted on three occasions about using the drugs.

Dave said: “On two occasions he spoke about using GHB on women, about a year apart. Then he spoke about it again four years later in a phone call.

“I’d never even heard of GHB then, I didn’t know what he was talking about.

“But I’ve had a lot of time since, and I keep thinking how he’s only ever been done for crimes when he was a taxi driver – which was years after this.”

Dave says the first time Worboys mentioned GHB was in 1998, when both men were booked for a function at the Dorchester Hotel in London, with both male and female strippers.

He recalled: “We were all being body-painted and John was p***** off at the amount of time waiting for his turn.

“We’d been sitting for hours waiting, and the girls who’d been booked with us were the best, all tall and slim.

“I said to John something along the lines of, ‘If only the girls at our usual shows could look like that’. I then made a joke that you wouldn’t be able to get them, looking like that.

“He laughed and then said, ‘Well, to be honest mate, there’s always ways to change that. There is a way, f****** drop some pills in their drink, they won’t even know, they’ll do whatever you want’.

“I was a bit surprised, but I just brushed it off and said, ‘Yeah, sure’. He said, ‘I’m telling you mate, it works’.

“I laughed it off as a lad but I thought, that was a weird thing to say, even for talk between strippers.

“He was being cocky when he sad it, but with a serious side as well. Knowing what I know now, I think Jesus Christ… but I didn’t take it seriously at the time.”

A year later Dave came face-to-face with Worboys again in the dressing room of a gay club in West London, shortly before he was due to perform.

He recalled: “We were sitting having a chat and he said to me, ‘So did you ever try that then, Dave?’

“I said to him ‘What’s that?’ and he said, ‘Putting the s*** in the drinks with these birds? I’ve told you, you can get anyone.’ I said to him, ‘No mate, I don’t need to do that, I get some decent looking girls anyway’. And he said, ‘Yeah, we all do, but the ones you really want, sometimes they don’t want to know’.

“He told me, ‘I’ve done it a few times and they never know’.

“Then he said,‘Some of the girls at shows, the hoity-toity ones in the West End who think they’re too good looking… I give them that and then I’ve stayed with them the night. They just fall at your feet and will do anything’.

“He said again, ‘It’s always worked for me’, then he told me, ‘Next day they don’t even remember what happened. I’ve never heard back from them so it must be alright. I’ve never had any problems’.

“He was boasting about it. I was just sitting there thinking, ‘He isn’t even drunk. Am I really hearing this?’

“That chat went on for about 15 minutes, minimum, and I’ve never forgotten it. I remember thinking, ‘There’s something not right in that head’.

“When I look back now I think he was testing me out, to see if I’d be interested.”

The last time Dave heard from Worboys was 15 years ago, when he phoned him to ask if he could cover one of his stripper bookings at late notice.

He said: “I already had three jobs of my own that night, but he carried on the phone call.

“He goes, ‘What do you reckon then Mr Omega, did you ever try that, what we were on about?’

“I thought, ‘Here we go again…’ I said to him, ‘What?’ and he said, ‘You know… I’m telling you mate, it works’. That was when John said again, ‘It f****** works though, doesn’t it. Give it a try’.”

Six years later, in March 2009, Worboys was convicted of one rape, five sex assaults, one assault attempt and 12 drugging charges. He was given an indeterminate sentence and told he would serve a minimum of eight years.

Police fear he drugged and sexually abused as many as 200 women in his taxi from 2002 onwards. The revelation last month that Worboys, now 60, was set to go free sparked outrage.

Last week we told how police are poised to question at least five new victims as they try to block his release. A number of women have been liaising with a specialist unit at Scotland Yard.

Dave, a dad of five girls, said: “In hindsight I wish I could have stopped him.

“Hopefully my testimony can help someone get justice now. I’m disgusted by him – what he did was unforgivable.”
