Brooke ‘Skylar’ Richardson, 18, appeared in court on a charge of reckless homicide
Richardson is alleged to have killed her newborn baby by burying it alive
Officers were tipped off by a doctor and believe the remains were likely to have been buried for 10 to 12 weeks, according to the Dayton Daily News.
The remains were found on July 14 in the back garden of her home in Carlisle, Ohio.
Authorities initially believed the infant was stillborn, but further examination from the Warren County Coroner’s Office determined that the baby was born alive, the newspaper reported.
No details have been released about the newborn’s death.
Officers later returned to the Richardson’s home to arrest the high school graduate.
She was booked at Warren County Jail, where she was released on $15,000 bond.
Richardson pleaded not guilty to the charges before appearing in court Friday for her arraignment.
Her attorney Charles Rittgers said that his client was a “very good girl” who planned to go to college at the University of Cincinnati in the fall.
He added: “She didn’t drink. She wasn’t a partier or a smoker.”
Richardson is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on August 1.
If convicted, she could face up to five years in prison.
