President Trump on Wednesday praised North Korea’s leader for backing off his threat to fire rockets at Guam, warning the alternative would have been “catastrophic.”
“Kim Jong Un of North Korea made a very wise and well reasoned decision. The alternative would have been both catastrophic and unacceptable!” Trump wrote on Twitter.
Kim decided not to launch a strike against Guam, a US territory in the Pacific where thousands of American troops are stationed, on Monday, but said he could change his mind.
”If the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions on the Korean Peninsula and in its vicinity … the [North] will make an important decision as it already declared,” Kim said, according to state-run media.
Trump has pledged to rain down “fire and fury” on North Korea if it continues to threaten the US with nuclear missiles.
The United Nations Security Council earlier this month approved severe economic sanctions against Kim’s regime for its weapons development program.
In July, Pyongyang successfully test-fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles that had the range to strike Alaska and the US mainland.
