Wounded Rep. Steve Scalise “is in some trouble” a day after he was shot by a Bernie Sanders supporter, President Trump said from the White House on Thursday.
“It’s been much more difficult than people even thought at the time. It’s been — he’s in some trouble. He’s a great fighter and he’s going to be okay, we hope,” the president said while unveiling a new apprenticeship program.
“I visited Steve and his family at the hospital last night, and I reassured them that the entire country is pulling for them, praying for them, and that we are here for them every single step of the way,” Trump continued.
“America’s hearts, and we mean this in the truest sense, sends its love. We’ve got a lot of hearts in this country, great hearts, and they’re all sending their love and support to the Scalise family.”
Scalise, the House majority whip from Louisiana, was shot Wednesday morning by James Hodgkinson while practicing for the annual House softball game.
He remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Capitol police and other law enforcement personnel shot and killed Hodgkinson after he shot Scalise and wounded four others.
