President Trump’s attorney toured the TV talk-show circuit Wednesday morning insisting Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer was not illegal — and that the commander-in-chief had no knowledge of it.
“The meeting that took place is not illegal,” attorney Jay Sekulow said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
“The president wasn’t aware of the meeting, did not participate in the meeting, did not attend the meeting.”
CNN’s Chris Cuomo pressed Sekulow on whether it was at least “inappropriate” for Trump Jr. to agree to the meeting — where he was told he’d get dirt on Hillary Clinton via the Kremlin to help his dad’s campaign — but the attorney wouldn’t bite.
He stood by statements from lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya that “nothing happened” at the meeting, and that she was there not to offer intel on Clinton, but to discuss US sanctions on Russian officials who violate human rights.
“[That] also gets you into the same basket of inappropriate conversations, because if she’s working on behalf of Russia to get rid of sanctions, that’s a similarly sensitive situation,” Cuomo said.
“You’re reading into a conversation you have no evidence of nor knowledge of,” Sekulow responded.
