Two children in critical condition after being struck by car

A driver was arrested for plowing into a woman walking with two 4-year-old girls in Staten Island, critically injuring the children, police said.

The crash happened as a 25-year-old woman was attempting to cross the street with the girls at the intersection of Vanderbilt and Osgood avenues around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

That’s when a Hyundai SUV driven by 56-year-old Elizabeth Johnson struck the trio as she was making a left turn onto Vanderbilt from Osgood, police said.

The two girls were rushed to Staten Island University Hospital North in critical condition and are said to have been upgraded to stable condition, officials said.

The 25-year-old woman who was shepherding the children across the street was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Police said she is not related to the girls and was described by police as a family friend.

Johnson, who remained on scene, was arrested and charged with failure to yield to pedestrians.
