A run-down of the rudest celebs in showbiz – as voted by fellow celebs

Knives out! As Richard Madeley calls Chris Rock the stroppiest star he’s ever met, a run-down of the ‘rudest’ people in showbiz – as voted by fellow celebs!

In a world of smoke and mirrors it’s rare to find a glimmer of truth, particularly when that world is inhabited by fixed smiles, stock answers, glazed expressions and media trained politeness.

For new arrivals, one might say it’s a case of welcome to planet showbiz.

There is after all a reason why members of the acting community are derisively referred to as ‘luvvies,’ or indeed why the façade of mutual red carpet respect shared by the wider community of celebs is stoically maintained at all costs, not least when cameras are lurking within one’s peripheral vision.

It’s all a matter of keeping up appearances, of maintaining the perma-happy media image and keeping the truth, of oneself or more pertinently one’s true relationship with fellow celebrities, a closely guarded secret.

But what if the mask slips? What if that rare glimmer of truth somehow cuts through the smoke, shining like a spotlight as fixed smiles turn to barely contained grimaces?

Fortunately, MailOnline has a torch at the ready. Read on for a list of the rudest celebs in showbiz – as voted for by their fellow celebs!

Speaking out: Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley needed no excuse to jump on his soapbox after Will Smith controversially slapped presenter Chris Rock at Oscars in 2022

Not happy: Madeley went to explain that Rock had behaved obnoxiously while he was interviewing the comedian and Jack Black for the animated feature Madagascar

Chris Rock – according to Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid

Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley needed no excuse to jump on his soapbox after Will Smith controversially slapped presenter Chris Rock at the 94th annual Academy Awards in 2022.

‘I’m not defending what happened to him, it’s wrong, completely wrong. But in 50 years in this game, he is rudest man I’ve ever had to interview, Chris Rock,’ he told co-host Susanna Reid.

The typically placid Reid was in agreement, adding: ‘I have to say, it stands out in my memory. He was just consistently unbelievably rude. A thoroughly unpleasant piece of work.’

Madeley went to explain that Rock had behaved obnoxiously while he was interviewing the comedian and Jack Black for the animated feature Madagascar, in which they both featured.

‘I didn’t smack him though,’ he quipped. ‘I kept my hands to myself!’

Pierce Brosnan – according to James Corden

Pot and kettle spring to mind, but perma-polite former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan is one of the rudest celebrities to have crossed paths with James Corden – at least as far as the Late Late Show presenter is concerned.

During the ‘Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts’ truth or dare segment on his popular show, Corden was asked to name the rudest celebrity he’s ever met by guest Khloé Kardashian – and his response was immediate.

Referring to Brosnan, he said: ‘I don’t think he’s a rude man, he just happened to be [to me]. I went to see U2 and I was there with my friend Louis and his wife, and my wife, and Pierce Brosnan was with some friends.

Shaken and stirred: Pot and kettle spring to mind, but perma-polite former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan is one of the rudest celebrities to have crossed paths with James Corden

‘They left halfway through the gig to go off, and we left the space [for them]. And then they had been gone quite a long time and Bono was like right there on this sort of big runway in the middle of the show – it was at The Forum.’

He added: ‘So me and my wife moved into this area, and literally, I’ve never felt anything like it, this arm went on here [his shoulder] and just pushed me out the way.

‘And I looked at him and he didn’t even glance at me. He just moved back into his area.’

While Kardashian suggested the Irish actor may have been drunk, Corden quipped: ‘Maybe he’s just a bit f**king rude.’

At odds: Both have a reputation for being characteristically cheerful – at least when the cameras are on – but Vernon Kay claims Hollywood star Jack Black is the rudest man he’s met

Jack Black – according to Vernon Kay

Both have a reputation for being characteristically cheerful – at least when the cameras are on – but Vernon Kay claims Hollywood star Jack Black is the rudest man he’s ever met.

Kay interviewed Black numerous times while hosting Channel 4 teen show T4 in the early 2000s, and he claims the actor and musician was consistently unbearable on every single occasion.

Mincing no words, he told The Sun of their first meeting: ‘I don’t know whether he’d had a hangover or whether it was because I was either the first or last interview of the day but he was horrible. He was an absolute d**k, an a******e.

Long-time star: Black has been starring in Hollywood films since the early 1990s. He is pictured in 2002, when Vernon was making a name for himself on Channel 4 teen show T4

‘When you’re so rude, arrogant, and pig-faced to a young TV presenter, who’s so nervous and trying to hone his skills, and you’re so arrogant to dismiss that, it’s just not on.

Kay later met the American star in the United States on multiple occasions, and each time his attitude was unchanged.

‘He was just a c**k,’ he added. ‘I interviewed him three or four times for various films. I interviewed him for Gulliver’s Travels, for School of Rock, for Shallow Hal and a couple of others and he was just the same every time.’

Loving: Fans of Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet will be aware that the actor is extremely protective of his mother, Jamey Stonestreet

Kiss off: In 2014 Eric went on a rant about rock star Gene Simmons who reportedly upset his mother during a flight

Gene Simmons – according to Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet

Fans of Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet will be aware that the actor is extremely protective of his mother, Jamey Stonestreet.

So it may not have come as a surprise that the star had some choice words for KISS legend Gene Simmons after the rock star and bandmate Paul Stanley were rude towards Mrs Stonestreet.

Opting to share the text conversation he had with his mother about the incident, the funnyman branded the rockers as ‘old ass makeup wearing f***s’.

The incident started when Mrs Stonestreet realised that she was on the same flights as the rock legends in 2014.

Social media spat: Eric shared the text conversation he had with his mother about the incident

Light-hearted banter: Things started out in a jokey manner

On the war path: Things took a surprise turn when Eric then updated his Instagram fans with a summary of what happened next

Clearly excited by the discovery, she sent her son a playful message which read: ‘I think Gene Simmons is on my flight. Do you think I should go give him a kiss’.

However things took a surprise turn when Eric then updated his Instagram fans with a lengthy summary of what happened next.

The image read: ‘Turns out both Gene Simmons AND Paul Stanley were on my mom’s flight to Kansas City.

Simmons tried to bully my mom out of her seat and when she said no, he said, it’s ok, I just bought the plane and then asked her for HER autograph. -d*** move.’

He continued: ‘The Paul called her ‘Aunt Bee’ -d*** move.I can’t wait to run into you two old a** makeup wearing f***s and tell you in person; you should have been nicer to my mom’.

Not backing down: Eric was only willing to accept an apology

Viral denial: The news rapidly spread as fans shared in Eric’s outrage and soon Gene took to Twitter to make a comment on the reports

The news went viral as fans shared in Eric’s outrage and soon Simmons took to Twitter to make a comment on the reports.

He tweeted: ‘Someone posted a story which is blatantly untrue. The essence of it was that we were mean to somebody’s mother. It’s simply untrue.

But Eric replied: ‘it was me and it was my mom. Just say sorry for the confusion Jamey Stonestreet and we’re good.’

As Simmons continued to deny any wrongdoing saying: ‘LOOK, I HAVE A MOTHER, TOO. I would never be mean, especially to mothers. You know that.’

Eric wrote: ‘Im gonna go ahead & believe my 70yr old mom on this one. u should continue to make HER the aggressor tho. Its a good color on u.’

However, KISS lead singer Stanley wrote an apology saying: ‘ I actually waited so your mom could get off first. The rest-A misunderstanding of joking. I apologize anyway. Good son.’

Eric happily accepted his apology and replied: ‘Thank u for that. She did tell me you let her go first.’I will tape my glow in the dark KISS posters back together now.’

Ariana Grande – according to Giuliana Rancic

In 2014 presenter Giuliana Rancic spoke out over rumours that Ariana Grande has earned herself a ‘difficult’ reputation.

‘I think she does have a little bit of a diva thing going on,’ she told E!.

Rancic then recounted a meeting with Ariana on the red carpet at the AMAs, where she felt the 21-year-old pop star would not conduct the interview until she was on her ‘good side’ on camera.

‘I remember, I think it was at the AMAs, she came up on the platform, and normally I stand on this side [her left side] to the camera. I had to fight 13 years to get this side to the camera, it’s my good side, but I fought 13 years for this, OK?’

She said WHAT? Giuliana Rancic claims Ariana showed signs of being a Grande-sized diva at the AMAs in 2014

She continued: ‘Little Ariana comes over, I feel like ‘bing’, elbow in my side, I’m like, “What’s going on?” and they push me to the other side.’

She added: ‘So I had to be on my ugly side. But I felt like a little bit of a, you know it was like “you either get on the other side or we don’t do an interview,” and I just felt like it’s one thing if it’s Mariah [Carey], you know, I’ll get on any side, I’ll bend down, I’ll climb a ladder, whatever it takes to get Mariah to do an interview.’

‘But when you’re new on the block, when you’re trying to earn your stripes, you’re young, you just gotta do what you gotta do, try to get a great reputation, try to go overboard to please people.’

Christina Aguilera – according to Valerie Bertinelli

Reality star Valerie Bertinelli once opened up about a less than pleasant encounter with Christina Aguilera that occurred a number of years ago.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the Hot In Cleveland actress gave her side of the story regarding her alleged ‘feud’ with the singer.

‘Valerie, it’s said that you had a feud with Christina Aguilera,’ the show’s host Andy Cohen asked. ‘What was that about?’

‘I didn’t have a feud with her,’ Bertinelli began. ‘I was a fan at that time – a long time ago – and I went up to her ’cause she was at a Van Halen concert, and I said, “Oh my god, I think you’re a beautiful singer.”‘

Despite the praise she claimed Aguilera brushed her off and muttered, ‘Yeah, whatever.”

‘She gave me the cold shoulder,’ Bertinelli recalled, ‘and I thought,”B****, I’m a fan. You can’t be nice to me?””

Bertinelli said she hadn’t run into Aguilera since the 2014 incident.

‘She might have gotten better,’ she added. ‘But I heard she hasn’t.’

Lashing out: In her 2016 memoir, Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins, the flame-haired star didn’t hold back either on A-list stars like Harry Styles, Jon Hamm and Demi Lovato

Jon Hamm, Harry Styles AND Demi Lovato – according to Kathy Griffin

In her 2016 memoir, Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins, the flame-haired star didn’t hold back either on A-list stars like Harry Styles, Jon Hamm and Demi Lovato.

Griffin is no stranger to speaking her mind. The comedy veteran has often been called out and faced repercussions over her sometimes blunt portrayal of fellow celebs.

And in her warts-and-all book, Griffin recalled a celebrity-studded night at the home of the late Sue Mengers, a high-powered Hollywood agent, when Jon Hamm, the star of Mad Men, entered the room.

‘What are you doing here?’ he scornfully asked Griffin. He ‘proceeded to get very drunk’, she writes.

Not friends: When she met Jon Hamm (left) and Jack Nicholson at a party in which Hamm told her that her Emmy ‘isn’t a real Emmy’. She also claims that pop star Demi Lovato (right) unleashed a ‘thirty-million strong’ army of fans against her on Twitter

Hamm, who played the heavy-drinking Madison Avenue advertising executive Don Draper, has since entered rehab and now talks openly about his struggle with alcohol addiction.

Back then at the dinner table, Griffin was seated between Hamm and actor Jack Nicholson.

Griffin recalled that Nicholson had just launched into a hilarious anecdote, imitating media mogul Rupert Murdoch, when Hamm started drunkenly ‘yammering’ in her ear.

‘You know your Emmy isn’t a real Emmy,’ he said to her. Griffin, who’s won two Emmy awards for her reality show, tried to shush him, but Hamm kept insulting her.

‘Do you know how o-o-o-o old you look?’ he sneered.

She wrote: ‘Nothing will convince me to like Jon Hamm.’

Cornered: She says she saw  Harry Styles corner superstar actor Tom Hanks at a party to talk about his many films. But after Styles abruptly pivoted away, she says Hanks dryly noted, ‘Sometimes I just want to deliver them to rehab myself’

If there’s anyone she loathes as much, it would be pop star Demi Lovato, who she claims unleashed a ‘thirty-million strong’ army of fans against her on Twitter.

Griffin had hurled a few ‘comedic insults’ in her act at Lovato, who had been repeatedly rude to her at celebrity events – prompting an overwhelming reaction from her followers.

‘I’m the person [they] call if Demi Lovato is cutting, or if Miley Cyrus flashed her crotch again, and it’s too breezy down there,’ she said on her show ‘Kathy.’

She was explaining that she had been on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night ABC show 33 times, often as a last-minute replacement.

At another celeb packed event, a hard-partying Harry Styles cornered superstar actor Tom Hanks, asking if he ‘remembahed’ his roles in his Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump.

Hanks allegedly replied: ‘I do remember.’ but Styles kept going in an ‘epic exchange’, reminding the major, but polite, star of his many iconic roles.

After Styles abruptly pivoted away, Hanks dryly noted, ‘Sometimes I just want to deliver them to rehab myself,’ Griffin writes in her book.

Blasted: Some of the characters he plays on screen may be lovable to millions of his fans, but in real-life, Hugh Grant is a ‘big pain in the a**”, according to Jon Stewart

Unwelcome: The American star also went so far as to ban Grant from ever appearing on The Daily Show show again after he was allegedly rude to backstage staff in 2012

Hugh Grant – according to Jon Stewart

Some of the characters he plays on screen may be lovable to millions of his fans, but in real-life, Hugh Grant is a ‘big pain in the a**”, according to Jon Stewart.

The American star also went so far as to ban Grant from ever appearing on The Daily Show show again after he was allegedly rude to backstage staff in 2012.

Speaking at a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey, Stewart – who has since left the show – said: ‘He’s giving everyone s*** the whole time, and he’s a big pain in the a**. And we’ve had dictators on the show.’

He also claimed the British actor complained about the clip of his flop movie Did You Hear About The Morgans?, which was played on the show, asking ‘What is that clip? It’s a terrible clip’ to which the host replied ‘Well, then make a better f***ing movie.’

Revelation: These days she’s a household name, but in 2011 when she was just 14-years old Hailee Steinfeld revealed that she was snubbed by one of her idols – Glee star Lea Michele

Lea Michele – according to Hailee Steinfeld (and the cast of Glee!)

These days she’s a household name, but in 2011 when she was just 14-years old Hailee Steinfeld revealed that she was snubbed by one of her idols – Glee star Lea Michele.

The actress told J-14 magazine: ‘When I was auditioning for True Grit, I was on the Paramount lot. I was wearing clothes from the 1800s that were big and uncomfortable.

‘Glee! also films on the lot and I love that show. I saw Lea Michele just walking to her trailer, and I was like, “That’s the girl from Glee. I’ve got to go ask for her autograph!”‘

‘So I walked up to her and asked for her autograph, but she walked by and a guy came and said, “Sorry, now’s not a good time!”‘

Steinfeld  said that despite being left in tears after the snub she’s still a fan of the TV star.

‘I was so sad! I was practically crying on the way home’, Hailee admitted. ‘But she’s beautiful, and she has an amazing voice.’

Furious: While Glee! has since come to an end, several stars from the hit show have publicly accused Michele of toxic behaviour while on set – among them Samantha Ware, who accused the actress of making her life a ‘living hell’

Sorry: Lea subsequently issued a public apology to Samantha and vowed to ‘be better in the future’

While Glee! has since come to an end, several stars from the hit show have publicly accused Michele of toxic behaviour while on set – among them Samantha Ware, who accused the actress of making her life a ‘living hell.’

Michele subsequently issued a public apology to Samantha and vowed to ‘be better in the future.’

The statement read: ‘One of the most important lessons of the last few weeks is that we need to take the time to listen and learn about other people’s perspectives and any role we have played or anything we can do to help address injustices they face…

‘When I tweeted the other day, it was meant to be a show of support for our friends and neighbours and communities of colour during this really difficult time…

‘But the responses I received to what I posted have made me also focus on how my own behaviour towards fellow cast members was perceived by them.

Ware appeared as Jane Hayward on the show’s sixth season in 2015

‘While I don’t remember ever making this specific statement and I have never judged others by their background or color of their skin, that’s not really the point, what matters is that I clearly acted in ways which hurt other people.

‘Whether it was my privileged position and perspective that caused me to be perceived as insensitive or inappropriate at times or whether it was just my immaturity and me just being unnecessarily difficult.’

Michele – who played lead character Rachel Berry for the musical show’s entire run – continued: ‘I apologize for my behavior and for any pain which I have caused.

‘We all can grow and change and I have definitely used these past several months to reflect on my own shortcomings.

‘I am a couple of months from becoming a mother and I know I need to keep working to better myself and take responsibility for my actions, so that I can be a real role model for my child and so I can pass along my lessons and mistakes, so that they can learn from me.

‘I listened to these criticisms and I am learning and while I am very sorry, I will be better in the future from this experience.’
