Adele’s 30 is named the global album of the YEAR – topping Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour and Justin Bieber’s Justice

Adele’s blockbuster 30 has been named the global album of the year less than one month after she took home three BRIT awards.

The Easy On Me singer, 33, was crowned the winner of the Global Album All Format Chart for 2021 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

She topped the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd to seize the annual accolade.

Her much-anticipated fourth studio album marked her return to music after a six-year gap.

The album, released in November, candidly explores themes of divorce, motherhood and heartache.

In an interview with Apple Music, Adele spoke about how her divorce from ex-husband Simon Konecki, becoming a mother, and reconnecting with her estranged father before his death influenced the album.

Adele was joined by Olivia Rodrigo and Justin Bieber in the top three of the Global Album All Format 2021 chart.

Rodrigo, 19, secured second place with her album Sour, and Bieber, 28, was at number three with Justice.

Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, The Kid Laroi, Abba, Morgan Wallen and Doja Cat completed the top 10.

The Global Album All Format Chart considers physical sales, digital downloads and streaming platforms across a calendar year. 

Adele also took home the coveted Album Of The Year gong at the BRIT awards last month, along with Song Of The Year for Easy On Me and the prize for Artist Of The Year.

Top 10 Global Album All Format Chart 2021 

Her album reached number one in more than 20 countries, including the UK, where it spent five weeks at the top of the Official Albums Chart.

During the week of the album’s release, Adele achieved a chart double on the Official Singles Chart with two songs from the album – Easy On Me at number one and Oh My God at number two.

In the US, 30 became Adele’s third album to top the Billboard 100 chart.

The album now tops all three of the IFPI’s global album charts – Global Album All Format Chart, Global Album Sales Chart and the first ever Global Vinyl Album Chart.

ABBA’s Voyage, the Swedish supergroup’s first album in 40 years, took second place in the Top 10 Global Album Sales Chart, followed by K-pop band SEVENTEEN’s Attacca.

For the vinyl album chart, Harry Style’s Fine Line and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours completed the top three.

Following its release, 30 surpassed more than five million physical album equivalent units in less than two months.

‘Her dominance of all three IFPI album charts speaks to her unique songwriting talent, her iconic voice and unrelenting global popularity.

The IFPI introduced the first Global Vinyl Album Chart for the 2021 awards to reflect the continued resurgence of the format.

She took home the first ever genderless Artist Of The Year gong after the male and female categories were scrapped and also won the award for Song Of The Year and the coveted Album Of The Year.

As she accepted her Artist of the Year award, she hit back at the ‘woke’ ceremony as she insisted she ‘loves being a female artist’, after bosses bowed to calls to rid the awards of gendered categories.

Adele also tearfully dedicated her Album Of The Year award for 30 to her son Angelo, nine, and her ex Simon Konecki because the record is ‘really about them’, before crediting herself for ‘putting out something so personal’.

Adele beat hotly tipped contender Ed Sheeran in the Artist Of The Year category – which now includes all artists regardless of gender – after they both released long-awaited albums around the same time last year.

During her acceptance speech, Adele told the audience: ‘I understand why the name of this award has changed, but I really love being a woman and being a female artist, as she referenced the changes the awards board had made to the ceremony.’

At the BRIT awards, the singer also sparked rumours that she was engaged to Rich Paul as she wore a whopping diamond on her ring finger.

Though she has refused to confirm if she is engaged, the singer was later spotted wearing an understated band on her ring finger.

When quizzed about the rumours during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Adele reasoned: ‘If I was would I ever tell anyone if I was or wasn’t?’

She did, however, reveal she wants to have another baby – her first with her man.

Hinting at family plans, she said: ‘It takes me a while to recharge, and I would like to have more children – I only just feel like I’ve caught up with my sleep from nine years ago when I had my son.’ [Angelo, with ex-husband Simon Konecki].  

Rich, who manages the likes of NBA star James, Anthony Davis, Ben Simmons, among other athletes, has been with the Adele since early 2021.

Hitmaker Adele and Rich went public with their romance at the NBA Finals in Phoenix, Arizona in July.
