This Morning regular Alison Hammond, 45, announced the sad news of her mum’s death on social media earlier this year. In an interview ahead of her new four-part series with Josie Gibson for the show, the presenter opened up about why she loves her hometown Birmingham and how it reminds her of her mum Maria.
That’s really important to me to still be close to her
When asked why she loves Birmingham so much, she replied: “Well firstly, I lost my mum earlier this year to cancer and she is now laid to rest just around the corner, literally a short walk away and that’s really important to me to still be close to her.
“And secondly, I’ve just been here all my life. It’s just one hundred percent home to me, and it’s where I want to be.
“I often see London as work, so it’s nice to get away from it and back home to Birmingham after work.
“Although during lockdown when I was doing items from my home that felt a little weird!”
This Morning viewers got an insight into Alison’s home when she displayed the likes of her garden, hot tub and kitchen for items on the show during lockdown.
She is often seen as a co-host on the programme as well as a regular guest fronting segments and competitions.
She added of the reaction to her home segments: “I would walk down the street afterwards and people would say ‘Oh I love your garden Alison’ or ‘How’s the hot tub?’ and I’d be like ‘What do you mean?’ but then I realised that people were seeing parts of my home on the telly for the first time!”
Back in February, Alison confirmed the death of her mum, who suffered from lung and liver cancer.
The ex Big Brother star penned a heartfelt tribute to her on social media to mark Valentine’s Day.
She wrote: “Today I dedicate Valentine’s Day to my beautiful, wonderful Mother Maria who passed away from liver and lung cancer.
“Yesterday my family and I celebrated her amazing life and laid her to rest in a beautiful ceremony she would have been proud of.
“Thank you mummy for giving me the strength to move forward in the knowledge that your ok and with God in Heaven now.

“I will always remember you and try and make you proud. I love you mum.”
Alison went on to describe her “best friend” as a “living angel” adding: “Please come to my dreams.”
Back in June, the presenter also tragically lost her dad Clifford, who lived in Jamaica.
She wrote on Instagram: “This is my real Dad Clifford Hammond who passed away last week in Jamaica.
“I’m saddened that I won’t be able to make his funeral and saddened that he wasn’t part of my life as much as I would have liked but I still have a sense of loss and emptiness.
“Sleep well Daddy, love leaves a memory no one can steal. RIP.”
The mother-of-one also shared a picture of her dad on her Instagram story with the caption: “My Daddy RIP.”
