Andie MacDowell lets her hair go natural and embraces changes of aging

‘I am happier’: Andie MacDowell, 64, ‘likes’ her gray hair after dyeing her locks dark for years… but adds she is struggling to ‘love’ her post-menopausal belly

Andie MacDowell has embraced the changes that come with aging. 

The actress, 64, decided to stop dyeing her curly locks during the pandemic and hasn’t looked back.

‘During COVID, I could see the roots with my face and with my skin and my eyes, and I liked it. I felt that I would be happier. And I am happier. I really like it,’ the actress told People at the New York premiere of her new film Good Girl Jane.

The Wireless star’s salt and pepper curls were proudly on display as she explained her reason for letting go.  

‘I’m 64, and this is the time of my life. Eventually, I’m going to be silver. And I wanted to have this experience of feeling what it is,’ added MacDowell.

The Four Weddings And A Funeral actress said it was her older sister who inspired her to let nature take its course.

‘My sister’s full-on silver and she’s only 18 months older than me. I thought she looked so much more beautiful being silver. I was jealous,’ explained Andie.

At a time when women often use filters to hide their flaws, the South Carolina native claimed she wanted to be more comfortable with herself, but admitted it wasn’t always easy.

‘Your belly gets bigger as you get older too. And I’ve had three babies. I’m constantly having to work on loving that part of my body. It’s so hard,’ she relayed.

‘Believe me, it gets even harder. Because after menopause, your hormones change, your shape changes. And I’ve got a very perceptive eye. So you see it. I will see it on other people, I’ll see it on myself,’ said Andie.

The twice-married model has three children, Justin, 26, Rainey, 32 and Margaret,27 from her first marriage to ex-husband Paul Qualley, 64. 

Both of her daughters have launched their own acting careers and Andie shared the small screen with Margaret in the 2021 Netflix series Maid.

She now finds herself receiving advice from both of young women who turn her own words against her, in a loving way. ‘If I ever say anything demeaning about myself, because I’ve taught them not to do that, they’ll say, “Why are you doing what you told us not to do?”‘
