Bucks Fizz singer Jay Aston has opened up about her mouth cancer battle in her first TV interview since recovering from a seven-hour operation on Monday’s Lorraine.

The songstress revealed she has had her tongue rebuilt during the arduous surgery and is hoping to be back on stage with her bandmates during her appearance on the ITV mid-morning.

Jay explained that she’s been left with a lisp following the surgery but is hoping with extensive physiotherapy she will be back singing to her full potential in a matter of months.

She said: ‘I’m doing really well. I’ve got a bit of a lisp. Hopefully in three or four months and with the physiotherapy that I’m about the start it’ll get back to normal.’

Discussing her diagnosis, she revealed her dentist was the one to alert her but it soon spread and required drastic treatment.

The singer initially had a sliver of tongue removed for a biopsy, but admits she was unconcerned because only 2% of cases prove to be cancerous and she had displayed no physical signs of illness, other than fatigue. 

The operation is the second she has had for the disease and was warned prior to it that it could prevent her from singing and even speaking, as it involved a centimeter of her tongue being removed.  

Surgery: The songstress revealed she has had her tongue rebuilt during the arduous surgery and is hoping to be back on stage with her bandmates – who go by Fizz – during her appearance on the ITV mid-morning 

Back to it: Jay explained that she’s been left with a lisp following the surgery but is hoping with extensive physiotherapy she will be back singing to her full potential in a matter of months 

She continued: ‘They’ve got everything. And they’ve rebuilt my tongue.’

Explaining how they reconstruction her tongue, she admitted following the surgery she looked like she was going to ‘a Halloween party’ and was unable to speak for a week. 

‘They’ve taken a chunk of my thigh off and they’ve gone in my neck and took my lymph glands out and they inserted my new tongue through my neck,’ she said. ‘I looked like I was going to a Halloween party.

Unable to speak: Explaining how they reconstruction her tongue, she admitted following the surgery she looked like she was going to ‘a Halloween party’ and was unable to speak for a week 

Adding: ‘I was very swollen up. I had the tracheotomy. It was pretty grim. I had that in for a week. I was very swollen up. I couldn’t talk for the first week. I just had to write everything on the board.’ 

The Eurovision winner revealed that her Bucks Fizz bandmates Cheryl Baker and Mike Nolan have been there for her every step of the way as she discussed her hopes to go on tour.  

She shared: ‘They’ve been amazing. Mike and Cheryl have been in touch with me all the time. Our fans have been incredible. I’ve had about 200 cards.

‘We will. This all kicked off when we were recording two albums. I had to put all my vocals down before I went in for my operation.

‘If I go back I will mime to begin with and then I’ll start singing more. Build my voice up.’       

Bucks Fizz sold more than 50-million records during their heyday before disbanding in 1988, two-years after the release of their final album – Writing On The Wall.
