Camila Mendes bravely details how ‘Riverdale’ fittings impacted her health

Camila Mendes may play the Veronica that “Riverdale” fans know and love, but embodying the character hasn’t always been easy for the 24-year-old actress.

Speaking at PopSugar’s Play/Ground summit in New York on Saturday, Mendes explained the physical and mental health struggles she has encountered while playing the role. Fittings were a particularly difficult experience, Mendes explained, as she was trying on revealing outfits that sometimes made her uncomfortable in her own skin.

“I didn’t realize I had an eating disorder until I entered the industry…I couldn’t even get through a fitting (on ‘Riverdale’),” she said, per PopSugar and Page Six.

“I used to think (dieting) was a nice, healthy way to live. It took a lot…to get rid of that fear of carbs,” she added.

Mendes also spoke about how she approaches managing her image on social media, saying, “If I don’t like a photo of me, I’m just not going to post it. But I’m not going to make it this fake idea of me.”

In an interview with Shape in Dec. 2018, Mendes spoke about her ongoing management of her eating disorder, crediting her recovery to her therapist and nutritionist, as well as a regular exercise schedule.

“I’ve struggled with bulimia. It happened a little bit in high school and again when I was in college. Then it came back when I started working in this industry with fittings all the time and watching myself on camera… If I ate a sweet, I would be like, ‘Oh my God, I’m not going to eat for five hours now.’ “

Mendes previously shared she was #donewithdieting in a Feb. 2018 Instagram post, inviting her followers to join her in the movement.

“My passion for education, cinema, music, etc. — all the interests that used to occupy my mind — had been eaten away by my desire to be thin, and it made me miserable,” she wrote. “I’m done believing in the idea that there’s a thinner, happier version of me on the other side of all the tireless effort.”
