It has been a week of highs and lows for Cardi – real name Belcalis Almánzar – as she recently made history at the BET Awards, days after she was indicted over a strip club brawl.

The I Like It hitmaker earned Album Of The Year at the 2019 BET Awards on Sunday making her the first ever female rapper to earn the honor.

She was recognized for her work on triple-platinum album Invasion Of Privacy at the star-studded event held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California on Sunday.

Cardi was the most nominated act of the evening with seven nominations, including two for the top prize – video of the year – with her hits Money and Please Me, with Bruno Mars. She also won Female Rapper Of The Year.

She opened the ceremony alongside her husband – real name Kiari Cephus – with the pair performing a raunchy dance routine.

The honour came two days after a grand jury indicted Cardi B over her alleged involvement in a New York strip club brawl, with court documents showing 14 new counts including two felonies against the rap superstar.

Initially facing only misdemeanor charges over the 2018 incident, the Bronx rapper in April had rejected a plea deal from the Queens district attorney’s office.

The new charges include two felony counts of attempted assault with intent to cause serious physical injury, according to the case docket.

The felony classification would not spell jail time, according to New York state law, but could result in probation that could impact Cardi B’s heavy touring schedule.
