Universal pictures dropped a first look at Cats The Movie on Wednesday, two days before the official trailer airs.  

In the behind-the-scenes clip, Taylor Swift danced with Idris Elba as they joined the Cats’ A-list cast including; James Corden, Jennifer Hudson and Rebel Wilson for rehearsals of the film adaptation of musical.

Dame Judi Dench, Jason Derulo and Sir Ian McKellen also featured in the teaser, which transforms Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-shattering show into a breakthrough cinematic event, which will be released on December 20.

Taylor, 29, who plays principal character Bombalurina- a flirtatious and confident female cat with a distinct red coat- said: ‘My first memories of performing go back to when I was in Pennsylvania growing up. 

‘My favourite thing was getting to be theatrical, to tell a story and I’ve always brought that narrative, element to my live shows. This musical is timeless. 

‘I came right off of a  stadium tour and straight into rehearsals.’ 

In the first look video, Taylor worked her most feline moves in a fierce duet with Idris, 46, who plays super-villain and mastermind criminal Macavity the Mystery Cat, also called the Hidden Paw.

Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables, The Danish Girl) also introduces Royal Ballet principal dancer Francesca Hayward in her feature film debut. 

While backstage footage of the cast played, Tom said: ‘At the centre of this incredibly, entertainment, comedic, fantastic musical is a very timely story about the importance of exclusion and redemption.’

James Corden, who will transform into Bustopher Jones, gushed over the director’s artistic genius: ‘I think it could only really be done by a director like Tom Hooper, he understands,’ he said.  

The Hidden Paw: Idris plays Macavity, who is a master criminal; he possesses mystical powers and is the villain of the musical

Bringing it to life: In the teaser, Taylor said: ‘My favourite thing was getting to be theatrical, to tell a story and I’ve always brought that narrative to my live shows. This musical is timeless. I came right off of a stadium tour and into rehearsals.’

Her calling: Taylor previously said of her role: ‘I love my cats so much that when a role came up in a move called Cats, I just thought, “I’ve got to do this, this is my calling,”‘

In character: The pair immersed themselves into the theatrics of the hit musical for rehearsals

The movie features Lloyd Webber’s iconic music and a world-class cast of dancers under the guidance of Tony-winning choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton, In the Heights).

The film re-imagines the musical for a new generation with spectacular production design, state-of-the-art technology, and dance styles ranging from ballet to contemporary, hip-hop to jazz, street to tap.

Jennifer plays Grizabella the Glamour Cat, the main character. A lonely and decrepit outcast, Grizabella seeks acceptance from the other Jellicle cats but is initially ostracised. She sings the most well-known song from the musical, Memory.

The Grammy Award winning singer, 37, said: ‘My connection to the arts is music. I grew up singing in the church that’s how we communicate, that’s how we relate.

‘This is a moment for you to step into a world that will completely entertain you.’

Acting legend Judi Dench, 84, also reminisced as she revealed in the teaser: ‘I was cast in 1981, just before we opened. I snapped my achilles tendon and I thought that was my history with Cats.’

Judi will portray Old Deuteronomy, a wise, beloved and elderly cat. Deuteronomy was originated by Brian Blessed in the West End in 1981, and by Ken Page on Broadway in 1982.

The actress was seen joking with Sir Ian McKellen. Ian will take on the role as Gus,  an old and frail, yet revered, cat, who ‘suffers from palsy, which makes his paws shake.’ His coat is described as ‘shabby’ and he is ‘no longer a terror to mice or to rats’. 

Judi described the huge set, which had been oversized to portray the world according to cats, said: ‘It’s a massive undertaking, an Alice In Wonderland experience.’

‘I went to cat school, which they have on set readily available for us. I learned how to be as much like a cat as I possibly could!”

Cats is produced by Debra Hayward, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Tom Hooper. The screenplay is by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, Rocketman) and Hooper, based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot and the stage musical by Lloyd Webber.

Cats is executive produced by Lloyd Webber, Steven Spielberg, Angela Morrison and Jo Burn.

One of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, the stage musical ‘Cats’ received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 years and earned the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical.

In 1983, the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and ran for an extraordinary 18 years.

Since opening in London in 1981, ‘Cats’ has continuously appeared on stage around the globe, to date having played to 81 million people in more than fifty countries and in nineteen languages.

It is regarded as one of the most successful musicals of all time.

Idris Elba took to Instagram to share a snippet of the full-length video, which hears him explain: ‘I’ve always done things that I felt I could do or I’d like to try. Cats the film, it will be a spectacle.

‘The movement and the songs, I think people will be like ‘wow!” voiced the star over snippets of rehearsals.

In January, Idris and Taylor took to the Golden Globes stage together after the Luther star heaped praise on the singer.

Speaking to Access Hollywood he admitted that she ‘has got chops’ and ‘holds her own’.

He said: ‘Taylor and I have known each other for a couple of years and we’re cool you know. She’s a good girl; she’s a great artist and she’s got a really great heart. 

‘I’m so excited to work with her in this film she’s going to be amazing.

‘And not only is she a musician but she’s an actress as well. I’m an actor, she’s got chops. She holds her own. There’s no doubt.’
