Chris Martin’s sister Nicola Wren reveals she hid her connection to the Coldplay star and changed her surname so people would know her success was ‘off her own back’

Chris Martin’s sister has revealed she hid her connection to her Coldplay star brother so people would know her success was ‘off my own back’.

Nicola Wren confessed she changed her surname from Martin when she began pursuing a career as an actress and a writer on Good Morning Britain on Friday.

She told hosts Adil Ray and Ranvir Singh that it was ‘really important’ people knew her success was due to her ‘working hard’ and not because of who her brother is.

Nicola said: ‘I’m very proud of my brother but I think because I’ve been pursuing a career as an actress and a writer it was really important for me that any success I had doing that, people would know that’s off my own back and from me working hard. (sic).

‘I think people go “Of course you’ll be successful because your brother’s famous” and I would be like “No! I’m going to be successful because I was Mole in Wind in the Willows when I was 11 and people said I was good”.

‘As soon as you enter the industry you realise that you’re only going to get the role if you’re good enough and if you put the work in.’

The writer and actress, who is set to star in E4 sitcom Stath Lets Flats, was just 11 years old when her brother’s career with Coldplay suddenly took off.

She said she chose the name Wren after her grandmother, who was ‘a Wren in the Second World War’.

She said: ‘My grandmother was a Wren in the Second World War and also I found the name in Pizza Express because I was really struggling.

‘I was sitting in Pizza Express and I was like “I don’t know what I’m going to call myself” and then I went through the menu and it said the La Reine pizza, and I was like “Nico-la Wren.” That’s who I’m going to be.’

But the playwright, who has put on two shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, said she soon decided she wants to ‘be herself’.

She said: ‘People always find out about me being related to Chris and I wanted to prove that I was working hard and doing my own thing and that’s kind of why I started writing.

‘I’ve done two plays at the Edinburgh Fringe over the past five years.

‘They both were really well received and got good reviews and transferred and I think after the last one, which went to New York then came back to London for a run, I just thought “Right I really want to be myself now, I just want to make people laugh because that’s what I love doing”‘.

‘If people are going to find out about Chris I’d like them to find out through my own story and my perspective’.
