Elvis Costello has dismissed plagiarism claims against rising pop star Olivia Rodrigo.

Social media users have claimed that the primary guitar riff in Rodrigo’s “Brutal” plagiarized the riff from Costello’s 1978 classic “Pump It Up.”

Billy Edwards, a British teenager, took to Twitter to comment, “First song on the album is a pretty much direct lift from Elvis Costello.”

However, in defense of Rodrigo, Costello replied, “This is fine by me, Billy. It’s how rock ‘n’ roll works. You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That’s what I did.”

The British singer-songwriter also seems to suggest that his song borrowed from Bob Dylan‘s 1965 track “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” which in itself was inspired by Chuck Berry‘s “Too Much Monkey Business” from 1956.
