Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, Normal People’s Paul Mescal, The Crown’s Olivia Colman and Succession’s Brian Cox lead the British nominees for the 2020 Emmy Awards.

Former Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones unveiled the nominations in a live-stream early Tuesday morning, amid COVID-19 restrictions.

And the British (and Irish) screen stars kept a long-standing tradition going, when they represented the other side of the proverbial pond in landing major acting nominations for the 72nd annual show.

Nominations: (L-R) The Crown’s Olivia Colman and Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer lead the British nominees for the 2020 Emmy Awards, it was announced on Tuesday

Olivia Colman, 46, won instant acclaim late last year when she debuted in her two-season run as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown.

Taking over the Royal role from Claire Foy, she has been nominated for an award in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.

Jodie Comer, 27, has won consistent plaudits for her compelling portrayal of assassin as Oksana Astankova/Villanelle in the BBC America spy thriller series Killing Eve. She will go up against Colman in the same category.

Nod: Normal People’s Paul Mescal is competing in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category

The screen stars will compete with other big names in the business, including Jennifer Aniston, The Morning Show; Laura Linney, Ozark; Sandra Oh, Killing Eve; and Zendaya, Euphoria.

It’s worth noting that Liverpudlian Jodie is in very familiar territory, as just last year she proved victorious in the same category for the same role.

Irish actor Paul Mescal, 24, has landed a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category for his starring role as Connell in the Hulu and BBC Three series Normal People.

Nominated: British screen star Brian Cox is up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

The County Kildare native will face off against a host of seasoned names in his category, including Jeremy Irons, Watchmen; Hugh Jackman, Bad Education; Jeremy Pope, Hollywood; and Mark Ruffalo, I Know This Much Is True.

Meanwhile, Scottish screen star Brian Cox, 74, is up for an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award for his portrayal of media magnate Logan Roy on HBO’s Succession, which premiered in 2018.

He will go up against Jason Bateman, Ozark; Sterling K. Brown, This is Us; Billy Porter, Pose; Jeremy Strong, Succession; and Steve Carell, The Morning Show.

Britain also sees further representation in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category, with Birmingham native John Oliver, 43, receiving a nod for his popular show Last Week Tonight.

Will she kill again? Jodie Comer has been nominated once more for her role in Killing Eve (pictured left with the Best Actress trophy from last year’s Emmy Awards)

Competing against him in that category are The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

The Emmy Awards are set to take place September 20 and will likely also be a virtual event because of the pandemic.

Still, the Television Academy’s 24,000 members were given a record number of entries to sift through this year, and presumably had plenty of free time to watch TV while cooped up at home due to the coronavirus lockdown.

‘COVID has obviously cancelled in-person events, so there’s been no face-to-face schmoozing this year,’ said Joyce Eng, senior editor at award-tracking website Gold Derby.
