Every woman I know has been harassed in some way: Keira Knightley says flashing, groping and violence are a common threat to women who are out on their own
Keira Knightley has revealed that she and ‘everyone she knows’ has experienced sexual harassment in some way.
The Love Actually star, 36, said that she didn’t know anyone who hadn’t been flashed at, groped, or threatened by a man.
She told Harper’s Bazaar: ‘Literally, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been, in some way, whether it’s being flashed at, or groped, or some guy saying they’re going to slit your throat, or punching you in the face, or whatever it is, everybody has.
‘It was when women started listing all the precautions they take when they walk home to make sure they’re safe, and I thought, I do every single one of them, and I don’t even think about it. It’s f****** depressing.’

Back in 2018, Miss Knightley told Variety magazine that she had also been the victim of ‘minor’ assaults four times on evenings out as she praised the MeToo movement.
Meanwhile, reflecting on her own experience of lockdown, she also told Harper’s Bazaar that trampolining and dressing up had kept her family upbeat.
Miss Knightley even made sure that her daughter Edie, six, had Chanel bows plaited into her hair to combat the lockdown blues.
‘We have a trampoline in our garden, and we decided we were only allowed to wear dresses on it,’ she explained.

‘I put on red lipstick every day, and every bit of Chanel that I have in my cupboard, and my daughter Edie had Chanel ribbons plaited into her hair and fairy wings. I thought, ”What is the point of these lovely things sitting in the wardrobe, when it feels quite apocalyptic and scary outside?” It felt so important to be really happy for the kids!’
Miss Knightley, whose next project is based on the bestselling sci-fi novel Ancillary Justice, is also mother to one-year-old Delilah with husband James Righton, who she married in 2013.
She said of her forthcoming project: ‘It’s about power.’
The July issue of Harper’s Bazaar is on sale from tomorrow.
