James Corden is facing a backlash from Friends fans after it was revealed that he had been chosen to host the hotly-anticipated reunion special.
The countdown has begun to next week's long-awaited Friends reunion, but when the trailer dropped yesterday it featured a controversial reveal for many of the sitcom's faithful.
Gavin and Stacey star James had already been announced as one of the 25 guest stars for the show, but it was only when the trailer was released that people realised he would be hosting a chat with the Friends cast – and some fans couldn't believe he'd been picked.
One person tweeted: "Why is James Corden involved in the Friends reunion. Why couldn’t he just let me have the one thing without him being involved."
Someone else added: "Who thought it was a good idea to finally reunite the cast of the most iconic show back together and put James Corden as the host!? What an absolute mess #Friends."
Another person fumed: "I don't like the fact that James Corden hosted the #FriendsReunion. Could've chosen someone else who had a deeper connection with the friends cast. Maybe Ellen idk. But not James Corden."
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer will sit down in a studio with James to talk about their favourite memories of being in Friends and the effect the show had on their lives.
But fans were outraged that someone with a closer relationship to the show hadn't been chosen instead, suggesting one of the wider cast such as Paul Rudd, who played Phoebe's husband Mike, would have been a better option.
One person tweeted: "Should have been an original cast member like @ReeseW@DannyDeVito or even better #PaulRudd the closest anyone ever got to being the 7th friend."
Someone else wrote: " @HBO out of all the people you could have chosen to host the #Friends reunion, you pick James Corden? I guess you’re trying to appeal to Harry & Meghan? There are literally scores of more appropriate hosts you could have chosen."
James, 42, is known to US viewers for his role hosting The Late Late Show and his hit segment Carpool Karaoke, but many didn't feel his fame now was enough to warrant hosting the reunion of Friends which ran from 1994 to 2004.
The Friends reunion trailer also featured the cast talking about becoming stars after shooting to fame thanks to the show.
Matt LeBlanc recalled turning on the TV to see aerial footage of their houses, while Jennifer Aniston shared that the producer of the show she was on when she was cast in Friends had warned her that her new job would never make her a star.
Friends: The Reunion will air on Thursday, May 27 on HBO Max.
