The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree: How Kate Winslet’s Doppelgänger daughter Mia followed in the Titanic star’s acting steps… WITHOUT being a nepo baby (according to her mum!)
Kate Winslet was 21 when she soared to superstardom playing Rose in Titanic.
And now, 26 years on, history is repeating itself as Kate’s daughter Mia Threapleton, 22, is carving her own way to the top following her critically-acclaimed appearance in last year’s hard-hitting drama I Am Ruth.
The actress, whose father is Kate’s ex Jim Threapleton, bore more than a passing likeness to her mum as she took to the stage at the awards, where she was referenced by her winner and co-star mother in her rousing speech for Best Actress.
In accepting her award for the show, Kate, said: ‘(I am) guaranteed to be the one of the night to cry, I can’t see (my speech). ‘If I could break it in half, I would give the other half to my daughter Mia Threapleton, we did this together, kiddo.’
And while Mia has certainly proved her acting chops with her appearance in the show, Kate has had to fend off accusations of Mia being a nepo baby – the term given to the children of superstars who fast track their way to the top.

Who’s that girl? At Sunday night’s BAFTAs, Mia bore an incredibly striking resemblance to her mother during her stint as Rose Dewitt Bukater in 1997’s Titanic

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
For Kate, her career truly began when she starred as Rose Dewitt Bukater opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in 1997’s Titanic, which went on to become the highest grossing film of all-time, making her a part of movie history.
She was 20 when the movie began filming – despite playing a 16-year-old – and celebrated her 21st birthday while shooting
Prior to her big break, her first role was a small part in TV series Shrinks aged 16 followed by a number of bit parts on British television.
On a similar timeline, Mia’s first role was as Helene in A Little Chaos in 2014 followed by her role as Alma aged 20 in Shadows in 2020.
Her appearance as Freya has marked her true entrance into the TV and movie elite, making her career trajectory near-identical to her mum’s.

WORKING TOGETHER
In the TV drama I Am Ruth, Kate portrays concerned mother Ruth, who tries to help her teenage daughter Freya, played by Mia, overcome a mental health crisis after becoming consumed by the pressures of social media.
Viewers were quick to praise the pair for their ‘powerful’ performances in the drama when the show aired in December, which they described as an ‘important’ portrayal of mental health and social media.
I Am Ruth follows the success of two previous I Am series, offering distinctive single films exploring the experience of women in moments that are emotionally raw, thought-provoking and personal.

It marked the first time that Kate has worked alongside her daughter.
Speaking about working with Mia, Kate recently admitted that she was ‘blown away’ by her daughter’s courage on set.
Appearing on Lorraine, Kate, a veteran in the film industry, said her daughter Mia didn’t need her advice and would even tell her to ‘shut up’.
The proud mother gushed that her daughter has a ‘power’ that she herself never had as a young actress as she spoke about the experience of working with Mia.
She explained: ‘As far as performance, she didn’t need me at all. There are even moments where she’d look at me and go, ‘Shut up Mum, let me do it!’
‘It was really amazing working alongside her and actually being blown away by her courage… she’s very, Very powerful. I think this young generation of actors, I have to say there is a naturalism to their acting and they’re just braver’.

NEPO BABY
Naturally, when any child of a star finds fame – including the likes of Hailey Bieber, neé Baldwin, or Kendall Jenner – there are whispers of nepotism.
This is something Kate has been keen to reference in the past as she has defended her daughter against such claims, thanks to her surname.
Mia has her father Jim Threapleton’s name. Kate and Jim met on the set of Hideous Kinky in 1998 where he was assistant director and they married in the same year before welcoming Mia in 2000. They divorced the following year.
She said: ‘What’s great for her is she has a different surname so she slipped under the radar and the people who cast her didn’t know she was my daughter and that was important for her self-esteem, of course’.
Kate then revealed she was not the brains behind Mia’s I Am Ruth casting, as she said the idea came from Dominic Savage, the show’s creator. She revealed she told him: ‘You have to audition her, and that has to be separate to me.’
Mia meanwhile said of her casting in the show: ‘I had just finished school, was free of exam hell, and felt excited, nervous and ready to start auditioning for things, and hoping that the opportunities to audition would come my way…
‘I just hoped I would get the chance to do what I had wanted to do for so long!’
