Inside Britney Spears and Jamie Lynn’s relationship amid conflict rumours

Britney Spears and Jamie Lynn Spears’ sisterly relationship has dominated headlines in recent weeks as the fallout of the pop star’s conservatorship battle continues to rumble on.

In her shocking court testimony, Britney, 39, spoke of her father’s control over her personal wellbeing and financial affairs and the detrimental effect it’s had on her mental health.

There was no mention of her younger sister Jamie Lynn who she was previously thought to have an incredibly close relationship with.

It led fans to speculate whether Jamie Lynn was supportive of the Toxic singer’s fight against the conservatorship or not, as she was yet to speak out at the time.

That was until Jamie Lynn, 30, addressed the situation in her Instagram stories in June, stating: ‘I’m so proud of her for using her voice.

‘If ending the conservatorship… or whatever the hell else she wants to do to be happy – I support that.

‘I am so proud of her for requesting new counsel like I told her to do many years ago. I’m not my family, I’m my own person. I’m speaking for myself.’

Since then, relations appear to have taken a turn with Britney directly calling Jamie Lynn out on social media while also seemingly throwing subliminal shade at her sibling.

However, the two didn’t always have a strained relationship – in fact, there was a time when wherever you’d see Britney, Jamie Lynn was never too far away.

Were Britney Spears and Jamie Lynn close?

There’s a nine-year age difference between Britney and Jamie, who was born on April 4, 1991, but it didn’t stop them from building a tight bond.

Sharing an insight into how she viewed their relationship, Britney once told Real Access: ‘I love my little sister and I am overprotective with her, and I don’t mind saying that. My sister is a handful. We are so different. It’s so funny — actually, she would be a lot better in this business than I am. Like her personality, she is Miss Diva.

‘She is so full of herself, it’s so cute.’

Jamie Lynn was often by Britney’s side for major events such as awards shows and movie premieres, growing accustomed to the spotlight she would herself enjoy in the future.

In 2016, the Zoey 101 actress reflected on their childhood to WFAA and said: ‘Truthfully, my childhood was so fun. Everything was new and everything was like Christmas because we were just from this small town and my sister had amazing success. It was so amazing to see my sister reach such heights.

‘I think that with all that good, you don’t expect the negative side. And I think, for me, it was just that I couldn’t believe people can ever be so negative.’

Both sisters enjoyed their own successful careers but finally collaborated on Britney’s album Britney Jean, blessing us with the track Chillin’ With You in 2013.

Jamie Lynn spoke highly of her older sister as recently as 2020, when she told The Hollywood Reporter: ‘Having Britney as an example was crucial for me. Not only did my sister build me up, but she made me feel like I was the star when she was clearly the star.

‘Britney was always really open and honest with me about the good and the bad that comes with this industry. And that’s what gave me the confidence to say no sometimes.’

That same year, Us Weekly reported that Jamie Lynn had been named a trustee of Britney’s SJB Revocable Trust.

Britney also appeared to have a close bond with Jamie Lynn’s children – daughters Maddie, 13, and Ivey, three – and begged fans to pray for her eldest niece when she got injured in an ATV accident in 2017.

What has Britney Spears said about Jamie Lynn Spears?

On July 17, Britney posted an Instagram post hitting out at those who criticised her dancing videos on Instagram.

‘I’m not gonna put on heavy makeup and try try try on stage again and not be able to do the real deal with remixes of my songs for years and begging to put my new music in my show for MY fans … so I quit !!!!’ she wrote.

The Oops!… I Did It Again singer then called out Jamie Lynn directly and said: ‘I don’t like that my sister showed up at an awards show and performed my songs to remixes !!!!! My so-called support system hurt me deeply !!!!’

It appeared to be in reference to Jamie’s performance at the Radio Disney Music Awards in 2017 when she performed a tribute to Britney, featuring a rendition of the pop star’s song Till The World Ends.

Jamie Lynn later shared a selfie with the caption: ‘May the peace of the Lord be with you, and your spirit.’

Fans are convinced that Britney posted a shady response as shortly after, she wrote in an Instagram caption: ‘May the Lord wrap your mean ass up in joy today.’
