J.K. Simmons has confessed he decided to hit the gym after being unable to believe his character when watching himself back on HBO’s prison drama Oz.
The actor, 67, went viral after photos of his shredded physique following a 250 pound weight loss were shared to Instagram by his personal trainer.
It had been assumed that he was buffing up for his then-upcoming role as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League, however he went on to rebuke this theory.

He told Business Insider: ‘After the second and final time that I got hugely fat in my life and when I lost that weight six or seven years ago, I pretty much decided that I was going to stay in decent shape for the rest of my life.’
Confessing he ‘was not in good shape at all’, J.K. said he was motivated to get in better shape after reaching 250 pounds in 2009.
He said of his tenure on Oz between 1997 and 2003: ‘I was overweight and soft and here I am playing the head of the Aryan Brotherhood in this maximum-security prison in the first-ever HBO original drama and I was watching the first season when it came out and I just thought, “Wow, I don’t believe this guy at all.”
‘I have to get my a**s to the gym and be a believable hard-a**s. I’ve gone back and forth with fine-tuning the kind of conditioning I’m doing.’

His trainer Aaron Williamson shared the eye-popping snaps of the Oscar winner flexing his bulging biceps at Gold’s Gym in Los Angeles in 2016.
He captioned the work-out shot: ‘Every time we train together I forget he’s 61 years old. Making the young generation jealous. This is what dedication looks like…
‘His intensity in the gym is through the roof. It’s been a privilege helping him stay on point. I’ve got a lot of respect for this man.’
The retired US Marine has previously trained Zac Efron, The Rock, James Marsden, Sylvester Stallone, and Jamie Foxx.

It follows reports that J.K is currently in talks to reprise his role as Commissioner James Gordon in the upcoming Batgirl film.
The news about the veteran actor was originally broken by The Hollywood Reporter, who noted that several other performers were also being courted for various roles.
The upcoming feature is currently in development, and it is scheduled to be released on the WarnerMedia streaming service in 2022.
