James Corden turned to Adele for help amid backlash in LA

James Corden reveals how he turned to Adele for help amid backlash in LA over his ‘rude behaviour’ in final Carpool Karaoke

James Corden reveals how he turned to Adele for help amid the backlash in LA over his ‘rude behaviour’ in the final Carpool Karaoke, which airs on Thursday.

The host of the Late Late Show, 44, who earns $36million per year, is returning home to the UK to be closer to his family members – but opened up about the mistakes he has made while in the States.

Corden famously landed himself in hot water after he was lambasted online by the owner of NYC restaurant Balthazar, Keith McNally, for being the ‘most abusive customer’ ever over an omelette he had ordered for his wife, Julia.

And a TV director has criticised Corden as the ‘most difficult and obnoxious presenter’ he has ever worked with, claiming the English comic berated and cursed at staff working on a popular British game show.

But Cordon showed his softer side when he reveals he turned to Adele, 34, when he struggled to deal with the fall-out of his behaviour (which he has apologised for).

In tears: James Corden revealed how he turned to Adele for help amid backlash in LA over his ‘rude behaviour’ in final Carpool Karaoke, which is set to air on Thursday

Tough time; Adele has revealed she once had a six-hour conversation with her close friend James Corden after he broke down over ‘work’ and ‘the internet’ – after he was criticised for his behaviour, with fans turning against him

Good pals: The singer, 34, hinted the talk show host, 44, wasn’t happy with his life in America during the last ever Carpool Karaoke, admitting it made her feel ‘unsafe’

Adele has revealed she once had a six-hour conversation with her close friend James Corden after he broke down over ‘work’ and ‘the internet’.

The teary-eyed singer, 34, hinted the talk show host, 44, wasn’t happy with his life in America during the last-ever Carpool Karaoke, admitting it made her feel ‘unsafe’.

During the final segment of the iconic format, Corden explained: ‘It was work stuff, and the internet, and all those things.’

Adele then responded: ‘It got me thinking, I felt so unsafe, with you feeling unsafe, because you’ve always been like [the adult], you have, since I was like 21.’

‘And then I went to the studio a couple of weeks later, and I wrote this and I sang it into my phone and I sent it to you and I do remember you saying, “That’s exactly how I was feeling.'”

Corden interjected, saying: ‘It was everything that I was feeling that day. I was floored by how you’d managed to take everything that I was feeling myself, and… life, and just put it in a verse.

‘It is the greatest privilege that from a conversation so honest between two friends that you created such a thing, it blows my mind.’

In October, Corden was hit by controversy when he was banned from Manhattan eatery Balthazar by owner Keith McNally, who branded him his ‘most abusive customer ever’ for allegedly berating his staff.

Taking to Instagram to announce the ban, Mr McNally – one of the most famous restaurateurs in all of New York – accused the comic of engaging in rude and childish behavior on two separate occasions.

On the first, Corden reportedly claimed a hair had been found in his food – and demanded free drinks to make up for it, according to Mr McNally.

Opening up: During the final segment of the iconic format, Corden explained: ‘It was work stuff, and the internet, and all those things’

Emotions running high: Adele then responded: ‘It got me thinking, I felt so unsafe, with you feeling unsafe, because you’ve always been like [the adult], you have, since I was like 21’

‘Difficult and obnoxious’: The actor, 44, also came under fire from Craig Duncan, who worked with James on an episode of A League Of Their Own and has criticised his behavior

Fuming: In a video shared to his YouTube channel, Mr Duncan (pictured) said: ‘The most difficult and obnoxious presenter I’ve ever worked with is James Corden’

Awkward: In November, Corden apologised to Ricky Gervais (pictured) after ‘inadvertently’ using his 2018 stand-up joke on his Late Late Show

Apology: James wrote on the social media site: ‘Inadvertently told a brilliant Ricky Gervais joke on the show, obviously not knowing it came from him’

The second involved his wife, Julia, and an egg-yolk omelette she ordered. Mr McNally claimed she received a plate with egg white on it, angering Corden.

The final straw came shortly thereafter when another omelette was sent out with a side of home fries instead of salad, sending the star into a full-blown rage.

Corden later apologised for his behavior and Mr McNally lifted his ban.

Elsewhere in the Carpool Karaoke chat, Adele revealed for the first time that a verse in her song I Drink Wine was inspired by Corden, when he later turned to the singer for advice as he was having his own tough time in life.

‘[The verse] was inspired by a conversation that you and I had, and it was the 4th of January, 2020 or something, and we’d been on vacation together with the kids…’ Adele began.

Adele, who finalised her divorce with Simon in March 2021, two years after announcing their split – revealed that she went on a family vacation with James, his wife Julia Carey, their three children, and her son Angelo, ten.

‘And we were on our way home and my mood had changed and it was like the first year that I felt like I had to hold myself accountable, for just being an adult, whereas the year before that I left Simon, you and Jules and the kids were so integral in looking after me and Angelo,’ she said breaking down in tears.

‘You used to do it with humour as well, you used to be like, “Good luck with that one!” with any sort of thing that I was pursuing, and you were always so, you were like an adult with me, you and Julia would always give me this advice.’

Some of the lyrics they sang along to included the lines: ‘How come we’ve both become a version of a person we don’t even like?

‘We’re in love with the world, but the world just wants to bring us down, by putting ideas in our heads, that corrupt our hearts somehow.’

Backlash: Owner Keith McNally described two incidents in which Corden mistreated his staff, which the Late Late Show host has since apologised for

Iconic haunt: The restaurant is a popular spot for celebrities, tourists and locals alike – everyone from Anna Wintour to Sienna Miller has eaten at Balthazar

JAMES CORDEN’S BEHAVIOR: ACCUSATIONS OF SCREAMING AT RESTAURANT STAFF, STEALING JOKES AND BEING ‘RUDE’

November 2022: ‘Stealing’ Ricky Gervais’ joke

James apologised to fellow comedian Ricky Gervais after ‘inadvertently’ using his 2018 stand-up joke on his Late Late Show.

Ricky, 61, tweeted a clip from the TV host’s show on Halloween night in which Corden repeated the joke from his Netflix stand-up gig Ricky Gervais: Humanity.

Corden wrote on Twitter: ‘Inadvertently told a brilliant Ricky Gervais joke on the show last night, obviously not knowing it came from him.

‘It’s brilliant, because it’s a Ricky Gervais joke. You can watch all Ricky’s excellent specials on Netflix.’

October 2022: Clash with restaurant owner

Corden faced backlash for screaming at staff at the Balthazar restaurant in New York because his wife received an egg yolk omelette with egg white in it.

He was branded a ‘tiny cretin of a man’ and banned last year by Keith McNally, the owner of New York restaurant Balthazar, who claimed he is the ‘most abusive customer ever’.

Mr McNally announced on Instagram that Corden was banned from the restaurant as punishment for rude and childish behaviour on two occasions.

On the first occasion, Corden was upset that a hair had been found in his food and demanded free drinks to make up for it, according to Mr McNally.

The second occasion involved his wife Julia ordering an egg-yolk omelette and receiving a plate with egg white on it. The final straw was when the remade omelette was sent out with a side of home fries instead of salad.

Corden later apologised for his behaviour and Keith lifted his ban.

October 2022: Snaps at a reporter

The talk-show host snapped at a New York Times reporter who asked him about his omelette incident.

He broke his silence as he told the journalist that speaking about the ordeal was ‘beneath your publication’.

The reporter, Dave Itzkoff, appeared grateful Corden hadn’t called off the interview, to which the comedian responded: ‘I haven’t done anything wrong, on any level. So why would I ever cancel this? I was there. I get it.

‘I feel so Zen about the whole thing. Because I think it’s so silly. I just think it’s beneath all of us. It’s beneath you. It’s certainly beneath your publication.’

December 2020: Slammed for ‘stereotyped’ portrayal of a gay man

Corden came under furious fire for his ‘horrifically bad’ portrayal of a gay Broadway star in new Netflix movie The Prom.

Corden’s performance has been slammed as ‘gross and offensive’, with viewers blasting Netflix for failing to cast a gay actor in the role.

In the movie, which was directed by American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy – who is himself gay – Corden plays the role of Barry Glickman, struggling to maintain his Broadway career.

‘The main, and huge, drawback [to The Prom] is James Corden,’ Erik Anderson, founder of awards-focused website AwardsWatch, wrote on Twitter.

‘His performance is gross and offensive, the worst gayface in a long, long time. It’s horrifically bad.’

2017: Fails to name cameramen on his show

In October, video resurfaced of Corden failing to name a single cameraman from his own show in 2017.

He had invited fellow comedian Jimmy Kimmel on to the show in 2017 for a segment called Spill Your Guts. It consisted of Kimmel asking Corden questions, and Corden eating or drinking unappetising dishes if he failed to answer.

‘Name two of the cameramen in this room,’ Kimmel asked in one portion.

‘That is a great question,’ giggled Corden, before replying that it was a ‘different crew tonight, actually’ and reaching for a fish smoothie.

2017: ‘Using’ Noel Fielding’s material

Noel Fielding also accused the star of using ‘my material’, tweeting an allegation from a fan that Corden had ‘totally stole’ his joke about distracting an armed robber by whispering.

On stage at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal in 2010, Mr Fielding sent the audience into hysterics when he suggested the best way to put off a thief in London is to whisper: ‘Oi mate’, because the ‘rules’ mean they will put down their blade and respond with a hushed tone: ‘What is it?’

In December 2017 James Corden was interviewing Matthew Broderick, who described being robbed. Corden said ‘the best way to get out of being mugged’ is to whisper: ‘You’re never going to believe what’s happened.’ Mimicking an attacker lowering a weapon, he said: ‘Because they go like this: ‘What?’, adding: ‘And it gives you time, you just bolt.’

October 2017: Makes Weinstein jokes

Corden apologised for jokes he made that appeared to make light of victims of Harvey Weinstein’s decades-long harassment.

He wrote in two tweets: ‘To be clear, sexual assault is no laughing matter. I was not trying to make light of Harvey’s inexcusable behavior, but to shame him, the abuser, not his victims. I am truly sorry for anyone offended, that was never my intention.’

His apology comes after he was condemned on social media for jokes he made at the amfAR Gala, which he hosted. The audience of A-listers reacted to his jokes with a mixture of groans and applause.

After making a crude Weinstein joke, he said: ‘If you don’t like that joke, you should probably leave now.’

He was condemned by the likes of Rose McGowan and Anthony Bourdain for his joke.

August 2017: Branded a ‘k**bhead’

In an interview with GQ magazine, Liam Gallagher appeared to hit out at Corden, branding him a ‘k**bhead’ before mistaking him for starring on Harry Enfield comedy Kevin and Perry.

The Oasis star was asked whether he would like to join Corden on the now-famous Carpool Karaoke.

‘No, thank you very much,’ he responded, before awkwardly adding: ‘No f**king chance mate,’ and mistaking him for starring on Kevin and Perry.

Admitting he hasn’t watched Gavin and Stacey, he added: ‘I don’t need to watch it to know I won’t like it, James Corden is a k**bhead.’

June 2010: Clash with Patrick Stewart

Corden had a very public spat with Patrick Stewart on the podium of the 2010 Glamour Awards.

Stewart had accused Corden of doing his hosting job badly, saying he was ‘looking around as if you would rather be anywhere in the world but here’.

Corden hit back with: ‘Oh! You couldn’t be more wrong, sir. You couldn’t be more wrong. Genuinely. And if it looked like that, I’m so sorry. But when you come up and present an award, just f***ing get on with it.’

Stewart then added: ‘From where I was, I could see your belly and that was from right at the back of the room.’

But Corden retorted: ‘I’m waiting for the punchline. Go on. No, seriously, go on. No, go on! You could see my belly, and we can all see you dying right now.’

Holding back tears, Corden called it a ‘privilege’ that Adele had managed to capture how he was feeling and put it into one of her songs.

He has apologised a few times for his behaviour.

In November, he said sorry to fellow comedian Ricky Gervais after ‘inadvertently’ using his 2018 stand-up joke on his Late Late Show.

Ricky then shared a clip of Corden repeating the joke, saying: ‘The bit about the town square advert for guitar lessons is brilliant.’

But the comedian later said he deleted the tweet because he ‘felt sorry for’ Corden.

Telling the joke, Corden said on the show: ‘If someone puts up a poster in a town square that says “guitar lessons available”, like you don’t get people in the town going, “I don’t want to play guitar! I want to play the piano you piece of s**t!”

‘Well that sign wasn’t for you. It was for somebody else! You don’t have to get mad about all of it.’

But James’ joke was a copy – practically word for word – of Ricky’s 2018 joke.

Ricky said in his comedy sketch: ‘They choose to read my tweet, and then take that personally.

‘That’s like going into a town square, seeing a big notice board and there’s a notice – guitar lessons – and you go, ‘But I don’t want f***ing guitar lessons’.’

He added: ‘Fine, it’s not for you then, just walk away. Don’t worry about it!’

Ricky noticed how Corden’s sketch was copied from his own 2018 and tweeted about it.

When a fan asked the British comedian whether Corden had asked permission to use the joke, he said: ‘No. I reckon one of the writers “came up with it” for him. I doubt he would knowingly just copy such a famous stand-up routine word for word like that.’

The Late Late Show later deleted the video of Corden making the joke from their Twitter page.

However, the latest segment was kicked off in a much lighter tone, when the Someone Like You singer played a prank on Corden by turning up at his home in LA.

Sneaking into his bedroom, Adele gave Corden a rude awakening with crash cymbals as she told that she would be driving him into work.

As they began their journey to CBS studios, Corden was seen in the passenger seat for a change as the two pals got ready to sing together.

However, things get off to a shaky start as the Tottenham-born megastar told Corden she is ‘s****ting herself being behind the wheel’, adding: ‘I’m actually not a brilliant driver.’

After launching into a rendition of her hit Rolling in the Deep, Adele has Corden in hysterics as she starts asking him questions about Carpool Karaoke, saying: ‘There’s been some bloody brilliant ones, and some s*** ones too.’

Talking about it being his very last carpool, Corden admitted that he was ‘excited’ and ‘scared’ with Adele, agreeing: ‘Yeah I bet.

‘I don’t know – it’s been a crazy eight years, in one sense it feels like it’s gone like that [clicks fingers] and in another I feel like I don’t remember what life was like before being here.

‘More than anything I will miss going into work with my friends everyday. I’m really going to miss LA, I love it here, it’s been a brilliant adventure. But I’m just so certain that it’s time for us as a family, with people getting older and with people that we miss, that it’s time to go home.’

Adele then revealed how Corden leaving is personally affecting her. ‘I’ve never lived in LA without you guys so I’m like a bit nervous about it.’

The pair also reveal a story about how he had tried to set up an elaborate prank to fool Adele into thinking that a wild bear was on the loose in Beverly Hills.

But things got off to a rocky start when Adele arrived early and her assistant spotted that there were secret cameras in the room.

Despite going to great lengths to pull it off – including getting newsreader Gayle King to record a spoof news report on the bear – Corden cut it short when he could see Adele was getting uncomfortable.

Later, James addressed Adele’s ‘EGO’ status now that she has won an Emmy, Grammy and an Oscar – and would just need a Tony Award to earn the prestigious ‘EGOT’ status.

‘I really don’t think that is ever going to happen,’ Adele laughed.

Gesture: ‘And then I went to the studio a couple of weeks later, and I wrote this and I sang it into my phone and I sent it to you and I do remember you saying, “That’s exactly how I was feeling'”

Prank: The video starts with Adele pranking Corden at his home in LA

Surprise! Adele is filmed as she plans to wake up Corden before driving him into work

‘I would never write a musical or anything like that… because I f***ing hate musicals. I also think the EGO suits me better.’

However, that doesn’t stop Adele from singing along to Barbra Streisand’s Don’t Rain On My Parade from the musical Funny Girl.

After yet another emotional sing-song to Adele’s Hometown Glory, the pair start to tear up again as Adele tells him: ‘You’re one of my best friends in the whole world.’

Wiping away her tears, she adds: ‘I’m just not ready to come back [to the UK] yet. Otherwise I would come back with you.’
