Jennifer Aniston says she wasn’t in tune with Matthew Perry’s ‘anxiety and self-torture’ amid the making of Friends
Jennifer Aniston said that the Friends reunion brought her new insights into the mindset of her castmate Matthew Perry and his inner struggles as a comedic actor amid production of the NBC juggernaut.
‘I didn’t understand the level of anxiety and self-torture [that] was put on Matthew Perry, if he didn’t get that laugh, and the devastation that he felt,’ Aniston, 52, told the TODAY show.
The perennial A-lister recalled the details of the pressure Perry, 51, said he put on himself on the set of the show when his jokes fell flat with the studio audience.

The Morning Show star spoke with the show in the wake of the Friends reunion, which aired last month on HBO Max, putting her back together with her co-stars on the series – Perry, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer.
Aniston, who played Rachel Green on the 90s NBC hit Friends, said that in hindsight, Perry’s revelation ‘makes a lot of sense.’
In the reunion special, Perry said that he’d ‘go into convulsions’ if his comedic lines didn’t resonate with the audience.
‘To me, I felt like I was going to die if they didn’t laugh and it’s not healthy, for sure,’ said Perry. ‘If I didn’t get the laugh I was supposed to get, I would freak out.’

The revelation also jarred Kudrow, who told Perry, ‘You didn’t tell us that then.’
Aniston also followed up the TODAY show about the revelation that she and co-star David Schwimmer had feelings for one another, but never acted on them.
‘I think there was something about unrequited love,’ she said. ‘I think David and I loved each other – we love each other still to this day – so I do think there was something that had to do with that.
‘And you were investing in something that was very relatable: the one that you never could have or the one you wanted to be with but they couldn’t quite get it together.’
