Hollywood actor Jim Carrey and Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood are among 100 Canadians newly-banned from entering Russia  in response to sanctions against the country by Canada.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Liar Liar star Carrey, 60, author and poet Atwood, 82, and Amy Knight, 77, a noted historian of the KGB, were among the well-known names on the banned list.

The trio, along with another 97 Canadians , many of whom are connected to ethnic Ukrainian organizations, were banned because of involvement in ‘formation of (Canada’s) aggressively anti-Russian course’, said a ministry spokesman.

Writer and filmmaker David Bezmozgis, 49, and Bones actress Kathryne Winnick. 44, are also among the Canadians on the list.

The announcement means  there are now 1,005 Canadian citizens and companies on Russia’s sanction list and comes amid the first day of the G20 leaders’ summit, in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia.

In response to the ban Atwood tweeted on Monday: ‘Prohibited from entering #Russia, books banned in #USA… gee, this 83 year old granny (me)must be some threat! >:>{ Will it be the #polonium tea or what?

She later tweeted: ‘Dang! @JimCarrey and I had planned a little naughty weekend getaway in Moscow. Guess it will have to be Kyiv instead.

Carrey responded: ‘Yes @MargaretAtwood, I’m afraid the worst has happened. We’re banned from Russia…but the problems of 100 Canadians don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world! We’ll always have Paris. Here’s looking at you kid.’

Back on February 26, two days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine started, Carrey tweeted: ‘It breaks my heart to see innocent people (especially children) put in harm’s way by yet another of history’s grandiose political jerks. Beware the unloved.’

On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed Canada will provide Ukraine with another $500 million in additional military assistance and impose sanctions on 23 Russian individuals.

Tete-a-tete: Carrey and Atwood joked about their new ban on social media

Canada has already provided  $3.4 billion to Ukraine to defend against the Russian invasion. The extra money will help fund military, surveillance and communications equipment, fuel and medical supplies.

A statement from Trudeau’s office said the sanctions target Russian individuals ‘involved in gross and systematic human rights violations against Russian opposition leaders’ including police officers, prosecutors, judges and prison officials,

The G20 Summit looks set to be dominated by the fallout from the Ukraine war, which has exacerbated global economic challenges, pushing up food and energy prices around the world.

Divisions over the conflict are so deep that there is uncertainty over whether leaders will be able to agree a communique.

There will be no condemnation of the invasion as Russia, a G20 member, will not agree to condemn itself.

Carrey joins fellow Hollywood stars Ben Stiller and Sean Penn in being banned from Russia – with the latter pair slapped with sanctions in response to their public criticism of Moscow’s war on Ukraine.

Stiller and Penn have been vocal supporters of Ukraine in the conflict and have met Ukraine’s President Volodymyr in high-profile shows of support.

In a televised meeting in Kyiv in June, Stiller, star of Zoolander, Meet the Parents and Dodgeball, told Zelensky: ‘It’s a great honor for me. It’s really wonderful. You’re my hero.’

Two-time Oscar winner Penn was in Ukraine recording a documentary when Russia invaded on February 24.

He was forced to flee on foot, joining the millions of Ukrainians crossing into Poland in the first days of the war.

Penn loaned one of his two Best Actor Oscars to Ukrainian President Zelensky earlier this month.

‘This is for you,’ Sean told Zelensky as he placed one of his Best Actor Oscars on the president’s desk. ‘It’s just a symbolic silly thing, but if I know this is here with you, then I’ll feel better and stronger for the fight.’

‘When you win,’ Penn told Zelensky, ‘bring it back to Malibu. I’ll feel much better knowing a piece of me is here.’

President Zelensky carefully placed the Oscar on his mantlepiece and presented the Fast Times at Ridgemont High star with a Ukrainian Order of Merit, thanking him ‘for his sincere support and significant contribution to the popularization of Ukraine in the world.’
