Marcos Alonso slotted home from Eden Hazard’s assist late on to claim a 3-2 victory over Arsenal in the London derby.
Substitute Aaron Ramsey almost equalised in the last minute when he let the ball bounce on the edge of the area and thumped an effort which beat goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga but landed on the roof of the net.
It meant that new Arsenal boss Unai Emery has suffered defeat in his first two games at the Gunners.
The Blues took the lead in the ninth minute through Pedro, the Spaniard tapping in Marcos Alonso’s cross after he had been set free down the left by a fine Jorginho pass.
Alvaro Morata added a second 10 minutes later, finishing a swift counter-attack moments after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang blazed over with the goal at his mercy.
But the Gunners hit back in the opening 45 minutes, first through Henrikh Mkhitaryan and then Alex Iwobi as Unai Emery’s found holes in the hosts’ back line.
Both sides looked slightly more solid in the second half, before wing-back Alonso found a way through in the 81st minute.
Once he gets a hand to Mkhitaryan’s shot, he should save it. Brave late block.
Provided assist but exposed defensively at times. Great block on Monreal.
Chelsea fans love his power and determination but was exposed a few times.
Does not look defensively sound in a flat back four. Place must be at risk.
Great going forward, scored the winner but same defensive doubts remain.
Looks good in new roving role but Chelsea miss his defensive protection.
MotM. Got the makings of one of the best buys of the summer. Excellent.
Lively start, looks much leaner and sharper. Forced Cech into fine save.
Caught in possession in build-up to Arsenal’s first goal. Can do better.
Scored with smart finish and his energy and movement caused problems.
First Premier League goal in four months, led line well and was dangerous.

Kovacic, for Barkley, 60 mins, 6
Giroud, for Morata, 75 mins, 6
Caballero, Moses, Zappacosta, Christensen
Brilliant save to deny Morata and was generally excellent. Solid distribution.
Whatever his defensive lapses, he was sensational and dangerous going forward.
Arsenal cannot play such a high line with two slow centre halves.
Booked. Made Morata look quick, got horribly turned and exposed. Weak link.
Arsenal looked more secure down the left with Monreal back and fit again.
Works hard, never hides and tries to be progressive. There’s big potential.
Booked. Hooked at half time after wretched and ineffective 45 minutes. Emery is ruthless.
A goal and an assist more than made up for his lack of defensive duties.
Refreshing for an Arsenal manager to substitute big players. Faded badly.
Surprise selection but provided defensive cover on the left wing and scored.
Missed an absolute sitter and had another good chance. Worked hard.
