Katie Holmes says 'unfortunately all women understand sexual assault'

Katie Holmes says ‘sexual assault is an understood secret amongst all women’ in candid interview where she also reveals her drive to ‘protect’ her ‘incredible’ daughter Suri, 16

Katie Holmes gave a wide-ranging interview to Glamour on Wednesday where she talked about sexual assault, her love of her daughter Suri and how she doesn’t view herself as sexy.

The Dawson’s Creek actress, 44, was promoting her new film Rare Objects – which she directed – with the publication when she spoke about family and her rise to fame.

In the film there is an early scene where the young lead Benita played by Julia Mayorga is assaulted.

She said of shooting the sensitive moment: ‘What was most important to me was what it did to [Benita] in the aftermath. To me, unfortunately, [sexual assault] is an understood secret amongst women, so we don’t have to share too much to know what we’re talking about.

‘Julia was so incredible in that scene, and that was really a difficult one to shoot because I just needed her face.

‘I kept telling both of the actors, ‘It’s your faces.’ And so they had to really go there. Everybody was pretty shaken up after.’

Rare Objects is based on Kathleen Tessaro’s novel of the same name, which was released in 2016.

Although the book takes place just after the Great Depression, Holmes’ movie is set in modern-day New York City.

The movie is centered on a young woman who attempts to rebuild her life by working in an antique store before various figures from her past begin to resurface.

Katie looked incredible for the Glamour cover wearing a sheer black and white top with gold detailing and sporting a nose ring.

Other looks saw her pose in a cut-out gold dress with a statement belt before changing into a quirky white corset top and grey trousers.

Elsewhere during the interview she gave a rare insight into family life with her 16-year-old daughter Suri – who she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise.

She said it has been very important to ‘protect her’ due to her only child being ‘so visible at a young age’.

Katie added that she was ‘grateful’ to be her parent because she is such an ‘incredible person’.

It was reported earlier this month that Suri has now started applying to colleges with the help of her mother – but the teen’s famous father Tom won’t have a hand in helping her, because the actor ‘has no part’ in his child’s life.

Katie was given ‘sole custody’ of Suri and according to their divorce documents, Tom agreed to pay Katie $400,000 a year until Suri turned 18 years old.

Suri has not seen her Mission Impossible star father in a decade after he went MIA when Katie refused to join The Church of Scientology.

Katie’s new film Rare Objects will be released both in theaters and on demand on Friday.

In addition to directing the film, the actress co-wrote its script, served as a producer and appeared in a supporting role.

Performers such as Julia Mayorga, Derek Luke and Gina Jun rounded out the movie’s cast.

Deadline previously revealed that the project was in development in June of 2021.

The upcoming movie’s trailer was subsequently released to the public this past February.

Holmes recently sat down for an interview with Access Hollywood and spoke about how she was particularly moved by the relationship between the novel’s protagonist and primary supporting figure.

‘What I love about this film and what attracted me to the book, is the friendship between these two characters,’ she said.

The performer went on to express that she wanted to illustrate their relationship in a positive light.

‘We see both of them struggle with different things in their life, but they also find the joy of life for each other, and we see them supporting each other. I think that’s really nice to see onscreen and to see women supporting one another,’ she said.

Mayorga also stated that she quickly bonded with the movie’s director while working on set.

‘I was super excited to work with Katie…there are so many talented people on this film,’ she said.
