Kelly Clarkson performed a high-energy cover of Soft Cell‘s “Tainted Love” during the Kellyoke segment of her talk show on Monday, June 28.
“Sometimes I feel I’ve got to run away/ I’ve got to get away/ From the pain you drive into the heart of me/ The love you share/ Seems to go nowhere/ And I’ve lost my light/ For I toss and turn I can’t sleep at night,” Clarkson sang as she was accompanied by her band Y’all.
“Tainted Love” was originally a song composed by Ed Cobb, formerly of American group the Four Preps, which was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. It attained worldwide fame after being covered and reworked by British synthpop duo Soft Cell in 1981. The track has since been covered by numerous groups and artists.
The synthpop duo’s version peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1982 and spent a total of 43 weeks on the chart.
Meanwhile, Kelly won two awards at the 48th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host and Outstanding Talk Show.
