Love Island EXCLUSIVE: ‘My son’s been unfairly treated’: Sherif Lanre’s mother blasts show following his shock departure for breaking rules
- Sherif’s mother has spoken to her son but doesn’t know what has happened
- It is not known what rules Sherif, 20, has broken but he mutually agreed to leave the ITV2 programme
- The chef has said he plans to ‘learn’ from his behaviour as he issued an immediate apology
- A Love Island source told MailOnline: ‘Sherif’s departure will be addressed on Love Island (Wednesday’s episode), but the reasons why will not be’
- His family took to Instagram soon afterwards to write that they were proud of him but later deleted the post
- Sherif was partnered with pharmacist Anna Vakili, 28, up until he left the show
- Back in 2016, Malia Arkian was kicked off the show just hours after her arrival after a fight turned physical
Sherif Lanre’s mother Diana Rollanson-Williams has blasted Love Island for treating her son ‘unfairly’ following his shock departure from the show on Tuesday.
Diana told MailOnline she HAS spoken to the chef, 20, since he was axed from the hit show for breaking the rules, but insists she doesn’t know the full story.
Speaking on the doorstep of her home in south London, Diana said: ‘I don’t know the real reason yet, but I’m determined to get to the bottom of it.
‘It’s unfair’: Sherif Lanre’s mother has blasted Love Island to MailOnline following his shock departure from the show for breaking the rules on Tuesday
Mum’s the word: Diana Rollanson-Williams claims she has spoken to her son but doesn’t know why he has left the show
‘I don’t know if he has actually done anything wrong yet.
‘I need to look at his Love Island code of conduct and I need to speak to him properly to find out what really happened.
She added: ‘But I’m his mum, I’m going to think it was a bit unfair. I think so. I’m going to defend my son.’
Diana, a psychotherapist, said Sherif had not gone looking for fame but had been ‘plucked from obscurity’ to appear on the show.
She said: ‘He is a lovely, lovely young man, a great boy. He is not a fame chaser. He was not looking for fame.
‘He was spotted buying a sandwich by producers and asked to go on the show so he isn’t ‘fame-hungry’.’
‘Sherif is just a very tall, lovely young man who was invited to join the show, which he thought would be a great opportunity. And I still think it was.’
Proud: A message on the reality star’s account, run by his loved ones, reads: ‘So sadly Sherif has left the villa. It’s unclear why at the moment’ – the post was deleted shortly afterwards
Drama: His mother said: ‘I don’t know if he has actually done anything wrong yet’ as social media was rife with rumours and memes regarding his exit
LOVE ISLAND’S TOP RULES…
There is no suggestion that Sherif broke any of the following…
1. No smoking inside the house, pool or garden
2. No nudity
3. No masturbating
4. No unsafe sex (condoms must be worn)
5. Contestants who have sex must see a therapist afterwards
6. Each star must be in possession of the complete rule book
‘I sent him off with the words ‘enjoy yourself, be yourself, this is a great adventure, nothing more and nothing less’ and that’s exactly what it was.’
Sherif broke his silence soon after he left the show, with an apology, admitting he ‘didn’t conduct himself in the right way.’
His departure comes just nine days after the ITV2 programme began.
Sherif added in a statement to MailOnline: ‘In a case of poor judgement, I broke the villa rules and as a result agreed with the producers that it was best for me to leave the villa.
‘I regret that I didn’t conduct myself in the right way and, as a 20-year-old guy, it’s something I know I will take on board and learn from.
‘I really enjoyed my time in the villa and look forward to catching up with everyone on the outside.’
Short lived romance: Sherif was in a couple with Anna Vakili, 28, with the pair getting closer in recent days and sharing a kiss on Sunday
A spokesperson added: ‘After breaking the villa rules, Sherif had conversations with the producers and it was mutually agreed that he would leave the Love Island villa.’
They declined to specify to MailOnline which rules Sherif broke.
Sherif works as a chef in the trendy Shoreditch district of east London while he took a two-year break from education.
Diana, who has a private practice and works with troubled youngsters, told how she used her training to keep a watch over Sherif.
Breaking news: Within minutes of the announcement, Love Island viewers took to Twitter in their droves to express their shock over his departure
She said: ‘I work with young people. Watching the show I’m seeing lots of the stuff that is going on and thinking about what they are experiencing as well.
‘And obviously I was looking at my son and observing what he might be thinking. But he seemed to be having a good time.’
Diana said she did not expect to see Sherif for a couple of days.
She said: ‘He is coming back soon. They have a few days to sort themselves out. They have an after-care package. And he will be home soon.’
A source told MailOnline: ‘Sherif’s departure will be addressed on the show, (thought to be Wednesday’s episode), but the reasons behind it will not be.’
A spokeswoman for ITV said: ‘Sherif’s mother does not blast the show and does not feel that he has been unfairly treated. We have a duty of care to protect both Sherif and his family and would request that their wish for privacy is respected.’
There is nothing to suggest Sherif broke any of the following rules, but according to The Mirror, the top ones include no smoking inside the house, pool and garden.
No nudity in front of fellow contestants (even in the shower), no masturbating and no drunken or unsafe sex (condoms must be worn).
The site adds: ‘Contestants who have sex must see a therapist afterwards (who can provide emergency contraception.
What’s going on? Before long, more viewers shared memes speculating as to what could have happened
‘And each star must be in possession of the complete rule book (and refer to it where necessary).’
No doubt Sherif’s departure is a huge blow to pharmacist Anna Vakili, 28, who has been coupled up with the star after the show started a week last Monday.
He didn’t get off to a great start on the show when no-one stepped forward to couple up with him on the first night.
He initially chose to couple up with Amber-Rose Gill, 21, but she chose to be with Callum McLeod, 28, and Sherif ended up with Anna.
Eager to know: The posts came thick and fast as the nation wondered what had happened
Sherif is the second Islander to be kicked off the show since it started this year.
Aircraft engineer Callum left the villa after five days after his partner Amber-Rose dumped him in favour of Anton Danyluk, 24.
Within minutes of the news about Sherif breaking, fans of the show took to Twitter in their droves to express their shock over his departure.
They wrote: ‘Sherif you’ve been a naughty boy #loveisland.’
‘Sherif has been booted out of the villa WHATTTTT.’
‘Sherif has been booted out of Love Island for breaking a rule that producers aren’t willing to disclose.’
‘Presumably the rule was against saying ‘it is what it is’ approximately eight trillion times per day.’
‘Apparently Sherif’s been kicked out the bull and I swear to god if Anton and Anna become a thing I’ll be fuming, cba w that guy.’
The first to go: Aircraft engineer Callum Macleod, 28, left the villa after five days after his partner Amber-Rose Gill, 21, dumped him in favour of Anton Danyluk, 24
‘#LoveIsland… Sherif has been booted out of the villa WHATTTTT… Unlucky Sherif mate x…
‘Sherif has left this villa so does this mean we can get callum back in PLEASE #lovelsland… I wonder what Sherif did to get kicked off Love Island? #LoveIsland.’
Sherif’s departure is the second time a contestant has been ejected from the villa for poor behaviour – singer Malia Arkian was kicked out just hours after her arrival in 2016.
In the second series of the show, Malia became embroiled in a row with Kady McDermott over a glass of wine and Kady’s love interest Scott Thomas, with the fight turning physical.
Just hours before Sherif’s scandalous departure, Kady took to Twitter to claim that Malia had punched her and caused a nosebleed during their argument in scenes she claims were censored by producers due to their graphic nature.
Malia furiously refuted the claims and branded Kady ‘a pathological liar’ in their ongoing spat which has raged on for three years.
ITV revealed back in May that the Love Island cast will have psychological help for 14 months after the show ends as they update their duty of care processes after the deaths of former contestants Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon.
Love Island: ITV has revealed key changes to their duty of care processes including enhanced psychological support and social media and financial training following reality star deaths (pictured Mike Thalassitis who passed away in March)
Producers now offer extensive care before, during and after the reality show, including increased therapy, social media training and even financial management.
Love Island have vowed they will work with GPs and psychological consultants to ensure hopeful contestants’ mental health are strong enough to take part.
A Love Island spokesperson said at the time: ‘The medical team also contacts each Islander’s GP to check they feel that person is able to take part.’
During filming, there is also a medical team who can be talked with at any time, and who monitor contestants to ensure they do not develop problems inside the villa.
When it comes to aftercare, Love Island ensure they give contestants a debrief on location with a psychological consultant.
Islanders are also given advice on adjusting to fame, and meet with a press team who go over any media coverage they had while on the show.
Producers also make sure each contestant has access to any other aftercare support if they need it, according to the publication.
Tragic: Sophie Gradon, (pictured) who appeared in the 2016 show took her own life in June last year – Mike, who appeared on the 2017 show found dead in woodlands in March
Following the death of Sophie Gradon, who hanged herself at her family home last year, and Mike Thalassitis, 26, who also committed suicide, Love Island contacted experienced physician and Chief Medical Officer Dr Paul Litchfield.
He independently reviewed the medical procedure the ITV show had in place to offer regular therapy to all contestants and not just the ones who reached out.
Now Islanders will be given social media training and financial management to help adjust to fame.
The spokesperson told the publication: ‘The key focus will be for us to no longer be reliant on the islanders asking us for support but for us to proactively check in with them on a regular basis.’
Love Island star Anna’s show future hangs in the balance as her partner Sherif is kicked off ahead of one female cast member being eliminated
Anna Vakili’s future on Love Island has been left hanging in the balance after her partner Sherif was kicked off the show on Tuesday after breaking strict rules.
Friday’s episode saw male contestant, aircraft engineer Callum Macleod, 28, eliminated from the series with it likely to be a female Islander leaving the villa this week.
The pharmacist, 28, will be the only girl who isn’t coupled up with someone on Love Island ahead of the next elimination, leaving her position on the show in jeopardy.

However, an ITV2 spokesperson appeared to confirm Anna’s future on the show, they said: ‘Anna will be remaining in the villa.’
It’s likely that Anna will couple up with fellow singleton Danny Williams, 21, who is the latest contestant to join the show, unless Love Island unveils new male Islanders for the pharmacist to pick from.
While viewers are already speculating that Anna and Anton Danyluk, who is currently coupled with Amber Gill, could partner up after the Scottish gym owner revealed he fancied her the most on Friday’s episode.
