Mariah Carey Only Told 'About 4 People' Before Her Surprise Wedding to Nick Cannon

Back in the ’00s, celebrities Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey managed to pull off a wedding that surprised almost everyone. The two tied the knot a few weeks into dating. And the “Honey” singer reportedly only informed four people of the surprise wedding.

The story goes that Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon met in 2005 at the Teen Choice Awards when he presented the singer with the surfboard award for Choice Music R&B Artist. Mariah had reinvented herself through her album The Emancipation of Mimi, earning much acclaim for the work. 

Cannon, on the other hand, was working on Wild ‘N Out as a host. In her autobiography, The Making of Mariah Carey, Carey wrote that she’d heard Cannon say “nice things” about her. But the two didn’t start dating until 2008, when she cast him as her love interest in the music video for her song “Bye Bye.” Carey shared in her book that she was attracted to Cannon because he made her feel safe.

According to Brides, Cannon popped the big question twice. First, he used a 17-carat pink diamond cleverly hidden in a ring pop candy. Later, he proposed during a romantic helicopter ride over New York. Carey noted the proposal felt like a fairytale.

Following the proposal, things moved quickly. The couple kept their engagement hush-hush to avoid the prying eyes of the media. Carey noted that she didn’t want to give people the chance to question anything in their relationship. Cannon said they talked everything out and decided to get married after just a few weeks of knowing each other.

In April 2008, Cannon and Carey shocked the world when they announced they’d tied at her island home in the Bahamas. “We only told people who had to know,” Carey told People. “Only about four people knew we were going down there to get married.” She deemed the event “really beautiful and sweet,” calling it “a spiritual moment.” 

What have Carey and Cannon said of each other since their split

Although they had a good time together, Cannon and Carey’s relationship ended in 2014. The news of their separation came three years after Carey gave birth to their twins, Moroccan and Monroe. Cannon filed for divorce in December 2014, finalizing it in 2016.

Despite their split, Carey wrote positively of her ex in her book. “She noted she was attracted to his faith, ambition, and their shared experiences, noting “he understood the madness” of the entertainment industry. 

Cannon, meanwhile, has expressed his desire to have Carey back. His song, ‘Alone,’ doubles as a tribute to the singer. However, some point to the fact that Cannon has fathered six more children since their divorce. Carey, meanwhile, is in a relationship with Bryan Tanaka. Cannon and Carey remain friendly as they co-parent their children.
