Cillian Murphy, 45, has admitted Peaky Blinders “simply won’t be the same” without Helen McCrory. The star went on to say that the show’s final season would be in the late actress’ memory.

Cillian, who plays Tommy Shelby on the BBC favourite, reflected on how Helen’s absence has been felt on the show.

Helen, who played the matriarchal figure Polly Gray on Peaky Blinders, died of cancer last year at the age of 52.

She died before filming for the sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders had properly got underway, which means she will not appear on screens when the show returns.

In an interview with Variety, Cillian discussed how he felt about Helen’s death and the impact it had on the final season of the show.

“I think the whole series is really in tribute to her and to honour her,” he said.

“Her presence and her character’s presence are very much still felt in the series, and it is very much part of Tommy’s journey in the season.

“It’ll be different without her, you know. It simply won’t be the same.

“I’ve spoken about how phenomenal she was as an actress and as a person and it is an enormous loss to the whole acting community and not just for our show,” Cillian continued.

“My thoughts are always with Damian [Lewis] and her kids.

“I just hope that the show will live up to her memory and our memory of her.”

He added that, in spite of the “really sad loss” of his co-star, the cast and crew of Peaky Blinders crew were “determined to make this a special series” and hinted that fans “will be pleased” with the show’s final outing.

Cillian has previously revealed that Helen would have been a part of the show’s final series, had it not been for the pandemic.

Filming for series six was unfortunately brought to a standstill in March 2020 due to the ongoing threat of coronavirus, and could only resume again in January 2021.

Helen had bravely been suffering in silence at this time, swearing friends and colleagues to secrecy as she faced gruelling breast cancer treatment.

Following her death, Helen’s husband Damian Lewis paid tribute to his wife on Twitter: “I’m heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer…

“The beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family.

‘She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives.

“She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.”

Helen and Damian shared two children together, a daughter named Manon, 14, and their son Gulliver, 13.

Peaky Blinders season 6 will premiere later in February on BBC One.
