Pete Davidson pens emotional post to Lorne Michaels and the cast of Saturday Night Live after confirming exit from hit show

Pete Davidson has officially confirmed that he will be leaving Saturday Night Live after seven seasons on the sketch show.

In a lengthy Instagram post shared by the 28-year-old comedian’s friend Dave Sirus on Saturday, Davidson stated that tonight’s 47th season finale show will be his ‘last one’ as he thanked creator Lorne Michaels and the cast: ‘I owe Lorne Michaels and everyone at SNL my life.’

The video shared alongside the caption featured Davidson hugging comedian Jerrod Carmichael, 35, after doing his ‘very first update and sketch,’ with Davidson adding, ‘It’s crazy to think that today I’ll be doing my last one.’

Pete’s post was shared from his pal’s account after the comedian deleted his own Instagram following online harassment from girlfriend Kim Kardashian’s, 41, ex-husband Kanye West, 44.

Davidson started out the emotional message writing: ‘This video was taken 8 years ago. Jerrod sent it to me last night and it made me super emotional in the best way.’

He then admitted that when he first joined SNL at age 20, he ‘had no idea’ what he was doing because he ‘wasn’t really a sketch performer.’

Davidson went on to praise his co-stars, noting, ‘I knew I could never keep up or go toe to toe with a Kenan Thompson or a Kate McKinnon so I was super scared at figuring out what I could possibly bring to or do for such a historic, respected show and platform.’

Pete continued to reminisce about his beginning on the show, writing, ‘I figured since I’m a stand up I’ll just try my stand up and personal bits on Weekend Update as myself and I’m so glad I did. I got to share so much with this audience and literally grow up in front of your eyes.’

‘We were together through the good and the bad, the happiest and the darkest of times,’ he added.

The comedian then thanked the SNL crew for always standing by him: ‘Im so grateful and I wouldn’t be here without them. I appreciate you guys always having my back and sticking up for me even when that wasn’t the popular opinion.’

Davidson continued to show his gratitude, writing, ‘Thank you for always believing in me and sticking by my side even when it seemed comical. Thank you for teaching me life values, how to grow up and for giving me memories that will last a lifetime.’

Towards the end of the post he expressed mixed emotions about his departure from the historical show.

‘SNL is my home. I’m so happy and sad about tonight’s show. For so many reasons I can’t explain,’ he said.

However he ended the post on a positive note, joking: ‘Can’t wait to be back next year in a Mulaney musical number’ before signing off as ‘Resident young person Pete Davidson.’

News of Davidson’s potential exit were reported by several outlets earlier in the weeks, along with the departures of his longtime co-stars Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant.

Davidson was a relative unknown when he joined the NBC comedy show’s 40th season but has seen his profile rise thanks, in part, to his colorful dating life.

He has been notably absent from the award-winning comedy sketch showing his past season, having missed several episodes while he was filming a new horror flick.

He made headlines over the past year as he dined, vacationed and got cozy with Kardashian and was seemingly in a social media feud with her ex-husband, Kayne West.

Davidson joined SNL in 2014 as a featured player at the age of 20. While he hasn’t confirmed what his plans are next, he has been focusing a lot of energy in the film and TV scene.

The funnyman is gearing up to release his comedy special on Netflix, where he is expected to divulge details of his relationship with Kardashian. The special is slated for release on June 13.

Davidson also revealed he is creating a TV show, Bupkis, which is supposed to tell a ‘raw, unflinching, fictionalized’ version of his real life.

SNL stars Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Kyle Mooney are also expected to be leaving the series.

National Voter Registration Day posted on Twitter shortly after he confirmed his exit from SNL, alleging ‘can’t confirm’ he was leaving the show to work with their organization. But, the post seems to be a joke.

Davidson became best known on the skit series playing the apathetic ‘Chad’ that first appeared in 2016 and has proven popular over the past five years.

Described as the ‘stereotypical stoner bro,’ Chad appeared in a skit with British superstar Adele when she hosted the show in 2020.

In 2020, Davidson released a movie based on his life, The King of Staten Island, cementing his status as a true breakout star, following in the footsteps of Kristen Wiig. The film marked his one of his first first leading roles at a major studio.

Since then, he has become seemingly committed to furthering his film and television career.

In March, Deadline revealed the SNL regular had missed some episodes of season 47 because he was filming The Home – a horror thriller in which he is the lead.

The film, directed by James DeMonaco, who also directed The Purge, tells the tale of Max, a troubled man who starts working at a retirement home. Davidson’s character realizes the residents and staff were ‘harboring sinister secrets’ and launches an investigation, which unveils connections to his own past as a foster child.

In April, A24 released the final trailer for his upcoming film Bodies Bodies Bodies, which is set to come out on August 5.

The film centers around of group of privileged young adults who are partying in a remote family mansion during a hurricane. The group decides to play a murder mystery game which prompts an actual killing spree.

Collider described Bodies Bodies Bodies as a film with a ‘bit of horror and plenty of laughs courtesy of its talented cast.’

Davidson is also is set to star in a comedy alongside British actress Naomi Scott in A24’s Wizards! Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B, is behind the film.

According to Collider, the film is about ‘two hapless pothead beach-bar operators who run into trouble when they stumble across stolen loot that they really should have just left alone.’

He and Kardashian may ‘temporarily relocate’ Down Under when he shoots the new film in Far North Queensland later this year.

The high-profile pair could call Australia home for several months during production of Wizards!, directed by David Michôd, reports 7News.

Additionally, Davidson revealed last week, during a performance at at NBC Upfronts, that he had partnered with Peacock to create a show based on his life.

‘I am hear to tell you about my new show Bupkis, which is based on my real life,’ he told the laughing crowd.

‘I’ve done a lot of projects that reference my life because that’s kinda all I can do.’

The series marks the second time Davidson has embarked on a project centered around his own life. It is unclear when the show will begin production or be released.

Among the other highlights from his time on SNL include when he talked about his mental health on the Weekend Update skit, speaking frankly about his borderline personality disorder diagnosis.

Davidson said: ‘Depression affects more than 16 million people in this country and there’s no cure, per se. But for anyone dealing with it, there are treatments that can help. First of all, if you think you’re depressed, see a doctor and talk to them about medication. And also be healthy: Eating right and exercise can make a huge difference.’

He then appeared to give SNL a slight dig as he said: ‘Finally, if you’re in the cast of a late-night comedy show, it might help if they, you know, do more of your comedy sketches.’

Colin Jost asked Davidson to clarify his comments, and he didn’t hold back, saying: ‘I was born depressed, but it might make me feel better if I was on TV more!’

He continued: The show is like eight hours long, and there’s like 50 sketches a week. It seems weird you wouldn’t use one of them to fight mental illness, but I guess that’s not your style.’

It was also on Weekend Update where he addressed his split from girlfriend Ariana Grande, saying: ‘I know some of you are curious about the breakup, but the truth is it’s nobody’s business.’

He added: ‘Sometimes things just don’t work out, and that’s OK. She’s a wonderful, strong person, and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world.”

More recently, Davidson has become known across the globe thanks to his relationship with megastar Kardashian.

It was revealed earlier this month, that Davidson compared Kim’s ex-husband Kanye West to Mrs. Doubtfire in his new Netflix comedy special, making light of the custody drama between his girlfriend and her ex-husband.

Earlier this year, Kanye, 44, made a string of accusations that Kardashian was preventing him from having full access to their four children; North, sight, Saint, six, Chicago, four and Psalm, three.

In a move that is sure to enrage the rapper, Davidson devotes a segment in Netflix Is a Joke: The Festival where he admits to ‘secretly hoping’ that her ex-husband ‘pulls a Mrs. Doubtfire.’

‘Does anyone else secretly hope that, like, Kanye pulls like a Mrs. Doubtfire?’ he told the laughing crowd in a recently shared clip.

‘I come home one day and they’re like, this is the new housekeeper. And he’s like, “What’s up fam?”

The joke is relation to the 1993 family comedy that sees Robin Williams playing a recently divorced man who dresses up as a female housekeeper in order to spend time with his children.

The set was filmed on April 30 at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, with Kardashian in attendance at the show.

Davidson previously hinted that he was ready to walk away from SNL back in 2020.

In an interview with Charlamagne Tha God he said: ‘I have conversations with a lot of people [about leaving].’

Adding: ‘It’s a hard thing to do, because you don’t want to ever pull the trigger too early. Everybody’s always been like, ‘You’ll know when you know and it’ll all be all right.’
