With recovery efforts following the devastating Texas storm currently underway, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have found a way to help. Just days after confirming the official end of their royal roles, and pledging that “service is universal,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have lent their support to a domestic violence charity and women’s shelter damaged by the effects of winter storm Uri.

Through their Archewell Foundation, Harry and Meghan provided relief and resources to the Dallas-based Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, who are currently assisting displaced families and dealing with major damage and flooding at their facilities, including transitional housing and an on-site safe school.

“[The duke and duchess] are fulfilling the shelter’s pressing need for resources to replace the roof and make repairs at Annie’s House, their transitional housing facility for women and children,” a spokesperson for the couple shared with BAZAAR.com. “The Duke and Duchess said to the Genesis team today that their hearts remain with the community, with the families Genesis serves, and with the volunteers and workers on the ground who selflessly provide care and support to those in need.”

In a February 21 statement, Jan Langbein, CEO of Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, added, “Today, we were notified that through the actions of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s nonprofit, Archewell Foundation, Prince Harry and Meghan will make a donation to help us get back on our feet. Not only will this gift provide for our critical needs, it shines an international spotlight on violence against women and children, letting survivors know that they are not alone.”

Since opening its doors in 1985, Genesis has been serving the Dallas area. Last year, it supported 3,700 women and children. In addition to offering emergency shelter services and expert counseling, the nonprofit also offers transitional housing and pro bono legal services. The unprecedented weather crisis in Texas resulted in Genesis temporarily closing its doors for the first time in its history.
