Selena Gomez continued her involvement with the WE Day cause on Friday night by taking the stage to discuss how her own health struggles have given special meaning to her efforts to support others. On the broadcast, Selena introduced 8-year old Nellie Mainor, who suffers from a rare kidney condition.
Selena told Nellie that the little girl’s own work to make the world a better place inspired her. “You encourage me and all my friends,” she told the girl, “to do the same.”
Then Selena reflected on her own health issues,
As maybe some of you know, I had a kidney transplant this year and so many people from across the country reached out and they offered their support. And others told me how hearing my story helped them find their own courage and helped other people want to get involved and donate. They reminded me how lucky I am to have a platform where I can share with you guys and I can pay the love forward.
Selena suffers from Lupus and underwent a kidney transplant when her own kidneys failed last year. Without having to be asked, her close friend Francia Raisa donated the kidney that saved Selena’s life.
We have a video clip of Selena referring to her kidney transplant at the WE Day 2018 event below.
