Smith Rowe reveals what Arsenal team-mates did after his Atletico goal

Emile Smith Rowe has revealed how his Arsenal team-mates reacted after he scored a stunning effort against Atletico Madrid in pre-season.

The 18-year-old, who was in fact 17 at the time, wormed his way though the Atletico defence before smashing in an equaliser in Arsenal’s International Champions Cup clash with the La Liga club.

The Gunners would go on to lose the match on penalties, but the teenager showed the world just how gifted he is and the type of player the north London club have on their hands.

Arsenal tied Smith Rowe down to a new long-term contract on Tuesday, after returning from their pre-season tour of Singapore.

Unai Emery told Arsenal’s official website: "I am pleased with Emile’s contribution so far this pre-season. He is working very hard and has lots of potential.

"I look forward to working with him and the other young players and helping them to develop as Arsenal players."

Smith Rowe has also spoken out about his whirlwind pre-season, and revealed how his team-mates reacted to his brilliant strike against Atletico.

He said: "Everyone was just so happy. Everyone was showing my surname, they kept shouting it at me. It was a great feeling for me and I’m still so happy – I can’t stop smiling!"

His family, unsurprisingly, showed a little bit more decorum.

"When I got back to the hotel, I got my phone and the messages they were sending me said they were so proud of me," Smith Rowe added.

"It gave me that belief that it’s only just started and now I need to stay focused and keep my head down. I just need to listen to them as much as I can."

Will Emile Smith Rowe be a first team player this season?
