Strictly Come Dancing 2022 kicked off its first live show in style on Saturday, and all 15 couples took to the floor to perform their first ever competitive routine of the series.

However, despite a fabulous start, Shirley Ballas, 62, was left squirming after she got muddled up with her paddles when giving Tyler West and his professional partner Dianne Buswell their score.

The blunde prompted host Claudia to pause the show and seek clarification from Shirley, who quickly noted that she had planned to give the pair seven points, despite the on-screen count saying six.

Oops! Strictly Come Dancing’s Shirley Ballas, 62, was left squirming after she got muddled up with her paddles whhile giving Tyler West and Dianne Buswell their score on Saturday

Shirley picked up her paddle with the number seven on it but the on-screen tally stated she was giving them six points.

Kiss FM DJ Tyler, 26, and his professional partner Dianne, 33, performed the American Smooth to the song Falling by Harry Styles.

The couple received a mixed reception from the judges but were praised by head judge Shirley.

Giving his comments, Anton said: ‘There is something about a big strapping chap dancing with a slight lady, and dancing together in a sensitive way, partnering her beautifully.

‘It was so gorgeous to watch you two dancing together. You have got a few problems below the waterline which I’m sure my colleagues will draw your attention but, the partnership, I loved.’

Giving a more harsh take, Craig said: ‘It all looked a bit sloppy to me… you have to dance through the moves, you can’t just step though them and think, “I do”.

‘The lift was good. I see potential.’

Glitch: Shirley picked up her paddle with the number seven on it but the on-screen tally stated she was giving them six points

Confirmation: Host Claudia Winkleman brought the show to a pause as she sought clarification on the scoring from Shirley

Motsi said: ‘I can see you guys have developed such a trust in a short space of time…

‘I think when you came in to hold, I need a bit more attention on the technique, gliding across the dance floor, opening it. But I can see the potential.’

Shirley added: ‘Any girl would feel very safe doing lifts and doing any kind of tricks with you. You just put her in the most beautiful space to enter and exit…

‘It’s only week one so from here forward you need to know what to heel, what to toe, what to heel, ball toe.

‘Just enhance your technique and it will show the beauty of your performance.’

However, when it came to scoring, Shirley could be seen reaching around under the table for her paddle to give the score.

She said: ‘I’m putting up a seven,’ despite her score on the screen reading as a six.

Emotional dance: The couple received a mixed reception from the judges but were praised by head judge Shirley

Host Claudia, 50, then had to intervene by saying: ‘Okay, we just need to clarify because Shirley held up a seven. I imagine you’d prefer the seven.’

To which Shirley replied: ‘I’ll take the seven, I got muddled up with my paddles, I was in a bit of a muddle.’

Claudia then went on to confirm: ‘Perfect, we’ll take a seven,’ which then brought Tyler and Dianne’s score to 22 points out of 40.
