Succession wrapped up its third season this week with one of the most powerful episodes in the show’s history.
According to Succession’s executive producer and director Mark Mylod, Sarah Snook’s incredible performance as Shiv Roy in the finale was the key to creating the ‘perfect’ ending for the season.
In an interview on HBO’s official YouTube channel, he stated: ‘For a long time I couldn’t find the ending. And then we did a take where we gave Sarah’s character time to process that moment’.
The moment he referred to saw Shiv’s husband Tom Wambsgans betraying her to pledge allegiance to her father in shocking style.

He continued: ‘And when Tom walked over and said “you okay”, despite that absolutely extraordinary betrayal, she put her game face on and said, “yep”…
‘And because it was such a perfect Succession moment, that she would still somehow find the strength to put that Teflon coat on and be in denial of that pain was so powerful to me that I knew we had the end of the season.’
Succession fans were thrown for quite the loop with the shocking finale, which left the future of the Roy siblings in serious jeopardy and led to fans comparing it to another brutal episode: Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding.
While the comparison is metaphorical at best – since no one actually died in Succession and many people died in the penultimate Game of Thrones Season three episode The Rains of Castamere – the outcomes were both similarly brutal.

The term Red Wedding was trending on Twitter on Sunday night – also fitting since both Succession’s All The Bells Say and GoT’s The Rains Of Castamerere were the ninth episode in both show’s respective third seasons.
After being divided all season long, the Roy siblings – Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv and Roman (Kieran Culkin) – finally came together after learning their dad Logan (Brian Cox) was planning on selling his iconic Waystar Royco conglomerate to GoJo founder Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard).
They determined that – thanks to the terms of Logan’s divorce agreement with their mother Caroline (Harriet Walter) – Logan couldn’t sell the company without all of the kids’ votes.
After they teamed up to confront him, though, the children all learned that Logan and Caroline amended their divorce agreement – with Caroline getting a piece of property her new husband Peter (Pip Torrens) was eyeing – and Logan no longer needing his children’s say to sell the company, which is exactly what he plans to do.
Powerful: ‘And when Tom walked over and said “you okay”, despite that absolutely extraordinary betrayal, she put her game face on and said, “yep”,’ Mark explained
Perfect: ‘And because it was such a perfect Succession moment, that she would still somehow find the strength to put that Teflon coat on and be in denial of that pain was so powerful to me that I knew we had the end of the season,’ he added
The final moments of the episode show the siblings slowly coming to terms with their now-uncertain fate, while Shiv is heard wondering how Logan knew they were coming.
It’s then revealed that her own husband, Tom (Matthew McFadyen) is also there, getting a hearty pat on the back from Logan.
The season’s final moments show Tom giving his wife a loving hug – after metaphorically stabbing her in the back – while Shiv seemingly knows it was her husband who betrayed her.
