The highly anticipated movie musical In the Heights will be released in theaters in June and the first reactions from early screenings are in!
Step Up and Crazy Rich Asians‘ Jon M. Chu directed the film, which is based on the Broadway show written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes.
Here is the film’s official synopsis: “Lights up on Washington Heights…The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.”
Anthony, best known for his work in Broadway’s Hamilton and the movie A Star is Born, is joined in the movie by Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Stephanie Beatriz, Dascha Polanco, Gregory Diaz IV, Jimmy Smits, and Lin as the Piragua Guy.
The early reviews on Twitter are mostly raves, with many saying it’s not only one of the best movie musicals in year, but one of the best films in a while. There is even awards buzz brewing with many saying that Olga, who is reprising her Tony-nominated work from Broadway, should get a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Oscars.
In the Heights is also getting praise for giving the Latinx community the representation they deserve on the big screen. Make sure to watch the movie when it’s released in theaters and on HBO Max on June 11!
