Jonah Hill has become a unexpected fashion icon over the past year, with blogs, Instagram accounts and even a special holiday dedicated to celebrating his style.
And the actor, 34, attributes his sartorial success to one person: himself.
“I don’t use a stylist,” Hill explains in Complex’s latest episode of its “Sneaker Shopping” video series. “I used to work with one when I was younger, a great guy named Michael Fisher, and he’s a really talented dude, but to me all of this up until now has kind of been what people wanted me to be.”
Hill, who recently opened up about his fluctuating weight and self-esteem issues, says that working on his new movie “Mid90s” helped him come into his own.
“Maybe getting older, going through some life, and really writing and directing ‘Mid90s,’ this really feels like I get to go out here and go be myself,” he continues. “And that is what fashion is. If you’re into it, your style is who you are. Don’t let people put you in clothes, f—k that.”
Naturally, fashion glossies are scrambling to dress the star in the latest designer duds, but he’s not having it. “I have some magazine covers coming out and they try to get these fancy stylists and it’s like, ‘I’m styling myself,’” he says.
Clearly, whatever Hill’s doing is working: The actor has a collaboration with Adidas in the pipeline.
