An 11-year-old hospital patient had two of her birthday wishes realized this month — meeting rapper Drake and getting a new heart.
Following a surprise visit from the musician last week, Sofia Sanchez finally underwent a heart transplant at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago on Monday and is in recovery.
“The surgery went well; we’re hoping for good recovery,” the girl’s mom, Natalie Sanchez, told the Daily Herald. “It’s not like you get a new heart and you’re cured. It’s still going well, but, you know, it’s a roller-coaster.”
The young girl had been awaiting a new heart for eight weeks.
“As with all heart transplants, the next 24-48 hours will be critical, but the heart seemed happy in its new home,” said pediatric cardiovascular surgeon Carl Backer, who performed the operation.
This summer, Sanchez was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that can lead to heart failure. She underwent open-heart surgery several weeks ago, so doctors could install a pump called a VAD.
A day before that surgery, she’d filmed a video, wishing for a new heart and for her favorite artist, superstar Drake, to visit her for her Aug. 18 birthday.
Sofia Sanchez appeared shocked and overjoyed last week when Drake fulfilled that wish and dropped by her hospital. In an Instagram post, Drake said the pair talked about Justin Bieber and basketball.
