Cosy and cool autumn fashion has never looked better thanks to fashion’s love-in with knitted dresses.

The weather is changing, and so our wardrobes, which act in direct correlation of the changing climes, must change too.

But aside from the inevitable avalanche of swaddling knits and cosy cardigans that are destined to make their way into our virtual shopping baskets, in turn, winding up in our wardrobes, there’s a new knitted BNOC staking its claim for our autumn line-ups.

Meet the knitted dress, which, according to Liane Wiggins, the head of womenswear buying at Matches Fashion, is one of the e-tailer’s highest-growing categories across its dress offering this year. Only a few days into what is officially classed as autumn and sales of knitted dresses have already spiked by 220% compared to this time last year, with woven frocks from the likes of Bottega Veneta, Joos Tricot and Khaite proving the most popular.

The ubiquity of knitted dresses in fashion circles is indeed predictable; after all, having spent last winter (and year in general, to be honest) trapped in the quagmire of elasticated waistbands, this year, the world of fashion is committing to the same levels of comfort without the lack of prowess.

All that’s needed to take a knitted maxi dress out for a spin is an en vogue pair of stomper boots (either short or tall; pick your poison), an It bag and there you have it: a day-to-night dress which requires minimal effort, but commands maximum attention. Job done.
