Manchester United are reportedly considering an audacious deal to swap Paul Pogba with Paris Saint-Germain star Marco Verratti.
The France international, who recently suffered a thigh injury, has been struggling for game time at United amid claims he isn’t seeing eye to eye with boss Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese signed the Frenchman for £89million at the start of last season, but Pogba’s transition back to English football still feels incomplete.
He’s been hooked for failing to perform in big games – including a 2-0 defeat to Premier League rivals Tottenham – and would apparently rather play in a midfield three, as opposed to where he has been playing, alongside Nemanja Matic in a two.
Pogba, who was absent for the Red Devils’ win over Liverpool on the weekend, returned late into the second half of Manchester United’s Champions League defeat to Sevilla on Tuesday.
He failed to make any impact on the game, and instead angered fans by throwing away possession with some questionable long balls as the home side chased the match in stopping time.
According to The Independent, Manchester United may be willing to offer their record signing a way out in the summer, and are considering a swap deal with PSG.
The paper reports that because Pogba and Verratti share the same agent, Mino Raiola, the deal is possible, but added the possibility is still a long way off.
Paris Saint-Germain would of course have to agree to the deal, and it’s not clear whether they would be prepared to part company with Verratti, even if they could secure themselves the world’s third most expensive player in the process.
PSG boss Unai Emery recently referred to the Italian as the future of the club, saying: "He has a lot of character, a temperament. We have talked with him about it many times. He has been frustrated in some games.
"He is the future of Paris Saint-Germain and knows that he must improve. He is an important player in the project."
