Jill Biden thanks organisers for ‘special’ inauguration
All eyes were on America’s new President, Joe Biden, and First Lady Jill Biden this week. President Biden was officially sworn in on Wednesday, and he has now taken up residence in the White House to start his presidency. Mr Biden officially has the opportunity to introduce the policy changes which got him elected, while the next four years will also be a chance for Dr Biden to pursue the causes close to her heart as America’s First Lady.
Jill Biden made a bold statement with her ensemble at this week’s inauguration, with her outfit said to represent unity in light of a very divided America.
Dr Biden’s outfit was designed by Uruguay-born, New York-based designer Gabriela Hearst, whose designs sustainable fashion.
The outfit featured embroidered flowers, each representing the federal flowers of America’s 50 states.
Each of the flowers on Dr Biden’s outfit took two to four hours to embroider.

The outfit has drawn comparisons to Meghan Markle’s wedding veil in 2018, which she paired with her iconic Givenchy gown.
The Duchess’s veil was embroidered with the national flowers of each Commonwealth country, in a touching tribute to the Royal Family she was joining.
The Duchess of Sussex said of her veil: “It was important for me, especially now being part of the Royal Family, to have all 53 of the Commonwealth countries incorporated.
“And I knew it would be a fun surprise for my now husband – he didn’t know!
“He was really over the moon to find that I would make this choice for our day together, and I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction.”
A picture of Dr Biden’s outfit was shared on Gabriela Hearst’s Instagram account, alongside the caption: “The message of Unity is the main inspiration for the creation of the Ensemble.
“Unity makes strength and it is needed for the road ahead. The blooming symbol to represent this message are the federal flowers from every state and territory of the United States of America.
“The flowers are embroidered into the cashmere coat on the hem line in a pattern that rises organically on the side’s seams.

“On the dress, the embroidery is placed on the silk organza neckline and arms. The body of the dress is constructed in silk wool cady.
“The Delaware flower is positioned at the heart level of The First Lady, from there, all the other flowers branch out.”
The state of Delaware has special meaning for the Bidens, as from 1973 until 2009 Joe Biden served as Senator for the state.
The new First Lady earned her doctoral degree at the University of Delaware, and has held teaching posts at educational establishments in the state.
Inside the coat, a quote from Founding Father Benjamin Franklin was also embroidered: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
This outfit was just one of many symbolic outfits worn by attendees at this week’s inaugural events.
Dr Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and former First Lady, Michelle Obama, all wore outfits in shades of purple.
The colour purple is seen as a symbol of bipartisanship as a mix of Republican red and Democrat blue, according to CNN Style.
The colour purple is also significantly symbolic of the fight for women’s suffrage.
