The King and Queen Consort were in Dunfermline, Scotland on Monday to mark the town’s conversion to city status. While Camilla kept her outfit and jewellery minimal for the day of engagements, she wore a particularly eye-catching brooch.

Like the late Queen, Camilla is renowned for her love of brooches.

She has worn many from her own collection, but she has also borrowed items from the royal vaults over the years.

For her visit to Scotland on Monday, Camilla opted for a sapphire piece adorned with cabochon stones.

Maxwell Stone of fine jewellery experts Steven Stone commented: “Camilla’s brooch is certainly an interesting piece.

“Not only does it feature a huge 35-carat cabochon sapphire centre stone, but the centre stone is surrounded by four 10-carat cabochon sapphires set in a square arrangement.

“A cabochon-cut on a sapphire shows the very distinctive raw beauty of the particular crystal.

“The look is incredibly unique and not like any other type of appearance in a gemstone.”

The brooch Camilla wore on Monday’s outing isn’t one Camilla has worn frequently in the past.

And according to an expert, this could signal it is a brooch from the royal archives with a link to Scotland.

“Queen Elizabeth II was renowned for paying homage to the four nations of the UK through her brooches and Camilla’s brooch looks like a historical piece, suggesting that it’s likely to be linked to Scotland – a country which the late monarch had great affection for,” Mr Stone added.

“I’d estimate the brooch to be worth approximately £100,000.”

When it comes to brooches, Camilla has long been a fan of animal-themed ones.

She is known to own several of the Van Cleef & Arpels ‘Lucky Animals’ brooches, including the dog, owl, rabbit, and hedgehog pins.

Camilla also possesses some more unusual animal brooches, including a dazzling stick insect pin.

For the Queen’s funeral last month, Camilla donned a royal brooch with poignant symbolism.

The Hesse Diamond Jubilee Brooch previously belonged to Queen Victoria, and Camilla’s wearing of it could be interpreted as a tribute to the Queen’s long reign.

Rachel Garrahan, British Vogue’s jewellery and watch director, said: “The Queen was famous for speaking through her brooches and now the Queen Consort takes on that mantle.

“Breaking with royal mourning tradition of wearing only diamonds and pearls, she made a very personal tribute to the Queen.

“The Hesse Diamond Jubilee Brooch was unseen for more than a century when Camilla started wearing it and is believed to have been passed down from the Queen Mother, whose jewellery she wears regularly.

“It is one of Camilla’s oldest pieces and its royal story links to her past and the monarchy’s future.”
