The Prom was nominated for best motion picture, musical or comedy, at the 2021 Golden Globes, and Jo Ellen Pellman, who stars as Emma in the Netflix film, which celebrates the LGBTQ+ community, was there to cheer on her team in an incredible Jonathan Cohen dress from the spring/summer 2020 runway. Not only is it remarkable for its design — simple knots hold together the rainbow tiered gown, offering a playful twist — but also for its messaging.
Jo Ellen, who was styled by Andrew Gelwicks for the occasion, wrote on Instagram: “I’m endlessly proud to be a part of The Prom family, a community that celebrates belonging and acceptance. I’m proud of our film and of every single person who lent their talents to it, on camera and off. And throughout our celebrations, I’m proud that we can acknowledge that institutional change is necessary and long overdue.” (She and her costar Ariana DeBose have also come together to create the Unruly Hearts Initiative, which raises money to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.)
Jo Ellen and Andrew definitely found a gown that encapsulates the young actor’s values for this event — that’s for sure. Scroll through to see her post in full and check out her fun, colorful jewels from Bea Bongiasca, then see the look’s initial runway debut.
