According to E!Online, The 20-year-old actress spoke candidly about the plethora of negative comments she receives in the press and online, speaking openly during a press interview for her upcoming movie Midnight Sun. According to the flame-haired star, her frustrations lie in being judged. “I think the most hurtful thing is when people look at you and they’re like, ‘Oh, you’re dressing a certain way. You have to be covered or else you’re a slut of some sort,'” she explained. “Whatever they want to call you. Whatever demeaning term they think suits you best.”

Thorne has been in the industry the majority of her life, since modeling from the age of six. While she had several acting roles, it was her part as CeCe Jones in the Disney series Shake It Up that saw her gain worldwide recognition. In the past few years, Thorne’s style has changed dramatically, leading the press to compare her extreme makeover to Miley Cyrus post-Hannah Montana. The singer has been vocal in her support of women’s rights, lending her voice to the Time’s Up movement earlier this year when she took to Instagram to share her own story of sexual abuse. Thorne went on to explain that her own experiences as a sexual assault survivor often make the comments she faces that more hurtful.

“If someone says, like, ‘Why do you dress that way? Is it because something happened when you were younger?’ And you’re like, ‘Oh, wait. Maybe actually it is. Hmm, that’s a good point.'” Thorne went on to praise her boyfriend, musician Mod Sun, for helping her regain a sense of self-worth and confidence, crediting him with seeing her through some dark periods of her life.

You can catch Bella’s latest flick Midnight Sun in cinemas from March 30, 2018. The movie co-stars Patrick Schwarzenegger.
