Actor Philip Baker Hall has sadly passed away at the age of 90, surrounded by those he loved.

The star's death was announced by Los Angeles Times NFL writer Sam Farmer, who said the star passed away peacefully on Sunday.

Taking to Twitter, Sam wrote: "My neighbor, friend, and one of the wisest, most talented and kindest people I’ve ever met, Philip Baker Hall, died peacefully last night," Farmer shared on Twitter.

"He was surrounded by loved ones. The world has an empty space in it."

The cause of Philip's death is not yet known, however the actor did suffer from emphysema, partly as a result of contracting pneumonia as a child.

Due to his condition, Philip could only film a few minutes at a time towards the end of his career.

As well as being known for his role as Lt Joe Bookman in the 90s sitcom Seinfeld, the Hollywood legend also starred in a number of films.

According to IMDb, Philip starred in 185 films and TV shows throughout the course of his career.

Some of which include, Say Anything…, Secret Honor, Hard Eight, Duck, Boodie Night, Magnolia, Bruce Almighty, In Good Company, The Amityville Horror, and The Matador, among many others.

Philip's Hard Eight co-star, John C Reilly spoke favourably about the star to The Washington Post in 2017 and said: "He has a basset-hound look, a gravitas and weight."

He added: "Philip has made me laugh harder than any actor I’ve worked with."

Since the news of Philip's death was announced, fans have flocked to Twitter to share their tributes.

One person wrote: "Philip Baker Hall had one of the funniest scenes ever in the entire run of Seinfeld. Arguably funnier than anything any of the cast members ever did. And it was because of how he sold the scene. Utterly brilliant. Peepees and weewees, joy boy."

Another wrote: "Philip Baker Hall just passed away. For Seinfeld fans, he was Lieutenant Bookman, the library cop, and was responsible for one of the great defenses of libraries in history: 'Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me.' May his memory be a blessing "

While a third said: "RIP Philip Baker Hall. An incredible actor in so many things, and I'll always remember him for one of greatest, if not the greatest, sitcom performances of all time as the Library Cop in Seinfeld."

Philip was married to Holly Wolfle and has two daughters Anna Ruth Baker and Adella Ruth Baker.
