Acclaimed American actress Lisa Banes has died aged 65, her injuries from a hit-and-run tragically proving fatal.

The screen star, known for her roles in box office hits Gone Girl and Cocktail, was hospitalised on June 4 after getting struck by a motorised scooter.

Confirming her death, her friends told The New York Post that Banes died on Monday.

In a poignant statement, her representative told Entertainment Tonight: "We are heartsick over Lisa’s tragic and senseless passing.

"She was a woman of great spirit, kindness and generosity and dedicated to her work, whether on stage or in front of a camera and even more so to her wife, family and friends.

"We were blessed to have had her in our lives."

According to Metro.co.uk, no arrests have been made following the scooter incident.

The actress had reportedly been travelling to meet her wife Kathryn Kranhol in New York City when the crash occurred, with Banes crossing the road only to be struck by the scooter.

With a police hunt currently underway, the driver of the scooter fled the scene.

In the wake of the incident, it was reported Banes was in a critical condition in the Mount Sinai Morningside hospital, having suffered a severe head injury.

In a statement, the New York Police Department said: "On Friday, June 4, 2021 at approximately 1833 hours, police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian struck at the intersection of West 64 Street and Amsterdam Avenue, within the confines of the 20 Precinct.

"Upon arrival, officers observed a 65-year-old female pedestrian lying on the roadway with severe head trauma. EMS responded to the location and transported the aided female to Mount Sinai Saint Luke’s Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

"Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined the pedestrian was attempting to cross Amsterdam Avenue, from west to east inside the north crosswalk at West 64 Street, with the pedestrian signal in her favor, when a scooter- traveling north on Amsterdam Avenue- did pass the red traffic signal and strike the pedestrian, knocking her to the roadway."

It finished: "The scooter then fled the location, continuing north bound. There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing."

Originally from Ohio, Banes moved to New York to train to become an actor at the esteemed Juilliard School, eventually carving out a career on Broadway.

Her cinematic break came with 1984's The Hotel New Hampshire, and she went on to star opposite Tom Cruise in the romantic drama Cocktail.

More recently, she played Marybeth Elliott – mother to Rosamund Pike's Amy Elliott – in the David Fincher adaptation of the novel Gone Girl.

Banes is survived by her wife of four years, Kathryn Kranhol.
