Marvel star Jeremy Renner undergoes surgery after suffering blunt chest trauma

Marvel star Jeremy Renner is intensive care after undergoing surgery to treat blunt chest trauma.

The 51-year-old was airlifted to hospital on New Year's Day following what was initially described as a 'weather-related accident'.

It has since been confirmed that the incident occurred whilst the actor was ploughing snow by his Nevada home.

The star, who plays Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is said to be in critical, but stable condition.

According to TMZ, a neighbour has reported that his Snowcat plough accidentally ran over one of his legs, which resulted in major blood loss.

It comes after the region was hit by a serious winter storm on New Year's Eve, which left thousands of homes without power.

It meant dozens of roads had to be closed across northern California and parts of Nevada with Renner even posting a photo himself on Twitter showing his car completely covered in snow prior to the accident.

His family released a joint statement on Monday night, meanwhile, which read: "We can confirm that Jeremy has suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopaedic injuries and has undergone surgery today, January 2nd 2023.

"He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition."

It continued: "Jeremy's family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families.

"They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans."

Renner is currently starring in a new US crime thriller Mayor of Kingstown, where he plays Mike McLusky.

According to the description by Paramount+, the show "follows the powerful McLusky family, power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry.

"Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption, and inequality, the series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither."

Renner was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor after his role in The Hurt Locker (2008) and for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Town (2010).

He married Canadian model Sonni Pacheco in 2014 before they filed for divorce, and they share custody of their daughter.
